Drunk Driver Intentionally Hits Bicyclist in Monrovia | BERGENER ...

Early Saturday in Monrovia a pedestrian, bicyclist, and car were all hit by a suspected drunk driver. According to CHP, Anthony Pina, 19, of Glendora was arrested on felony hit and run and suspicion of driving under the influence.

It began when Pina struck a pedestrian before 6 a.m. Saturday morning. Fortunately the pedestrian suffered only minor injuries. However, soon after, the motorist intentionally drove doughnuts around a bicyclist until he hit the man, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Another driver, who saw Pina terrorizing the bicyclist, followed him onto the 210 freeway until his Mini Cooper was also hit by the suspected drunk driver. According to police, neither the driver nor the passengers of the Mini Cooper were injured.

Eventually, Pina crashed into a freeway center divider while trying to evade police, ending the chase.

Driving under the influence is a serious offense that should never be taken lightly. It is especially scary that this particular driver seems to have been intentionally causing mayhem and putting the citizens of Monrovia in danger.

While most people are aware of the protections motorists have after being hit by a drunk driver, significantly less time is devoted to addressing the rights of pedestrians and bicyclists.

Pedestrian accidents can be more serious than collisions involving two automobiles. There are no metal car frames, safety belts, or airbags to protect people who are walking. Victims are sometimes so affected by the trauma of an accident that they don?t even realize they are hurt.

It is all too common that a pedestrian will declare they are okay and forego collecting the information of the driver and witnesses, only to be confronted later with serious pain and injuries. At this point it becomes very difficult to get adequate compensation from a personal injury claim. This is why it is important to get a police report, contact information of anyone who was there, and to be evaluated by a doctor immediately following any accident with a motor vehicle.

Even though cyclists have the same rights to the road as drivers, injuries on a bicycle can be just as serious as those suffered by pedestrians. While a bicyclist is usually wearing a helmet, they can also be traveling at much higher speeds than a pedestrian when the accident occurs. Their level of protection from injury is not much greater than that of someone on foot.

At Bergener & Associates we take the injuries of pedestrians and bicyclists very seriously?especially when those injuries are caused by a collision that can hardly be labeled an accident. Drunk and reckless driving are inexcusable. They not only endanger everyone on the road, but everyone near the road as well.
