Mayor Ford refused to attend Pride so the gay community plans to bring the celeb...

I'm a huge Pride supporter. As a friend of mine once put it (so well) "When it comes to friends, many of my dearest are also my queerest."

That being said, why is there a certain element of the LGBT community that insists on making parties...

less fun? Pride is an amazing, fun time! Why would they WANT Ford there when it would just cause issues and controversy? Now, they feel the need to go a ruin another party where people are just gathering to have a good time, by adding issues and controversy.

Are they just going to attend and enjoy the party in the manner that the hosts intend? Of course not. They're going to show up and make a scene. We wouldn't allow it if someone showed up at Pride with the sole purpose of being a disturbance, so why the hypocrisy?

Let Ford have his party, and let's try to be adults about this and skip the immature tit-for-tat.

Neil Armstrong, X Prize and SPACE.com: A True 'Right Stuff' Moment

Editor's Note: Neil Armstrong, the first person ever to walk on the moon, died Saturday (Aug. 25), but the legacy of his "one small step" will live on in the history books. Here, SPACE.com science and technology writer Dave Brody recalls a particular moment with Armstrong from 2004, when the iconic astronaut was serving on the board of trustees of SPACE.com.

On the morning of Sept. 29, 2004,?Neil Armstrong was participating in an executive meeting of SPACE.com in?New York City as an investor and board?member. ?At the same time, 2,600 miles to the west, Scaled Composites was preparing to launch its SpaceShipOne in the first of two competitive flights to capture the Ansari X Prize.

We interrupted the meeting at 11 a.m. and invited the board members to watch the video feed from X Prize (a media partner of SPACE.com) under way in Mojave, Calif.

Neil was standing about 10 feet from our large plasma monitor when Scaled's WhiteKight carrier aircraft released SpaceShipOne at 10 minutes past the hour. Moments into the drop, pilot Mike Melville fired the hybrid rocket motor and pulled up sharply.

The motor was capable of providing 82 seconds of thrust. Less than a minute into that burn, however, Neil quickly strode toward the screen, watching closely. He'd caught something nobody else saw. "That's a pretty good roll ...," he said very, very quietly. ?Slowly, the rest of us began to notice the rocket motor's contrail had taken on a corkscrew shape over the track of the last 17 seconds of powered flight.

None of us yet knew what Neil Armstrong had already figured out: Up on SpaceShipOne, Mike Melville had cut the engine?s power early. Mike was running out of atmosphere in which to use the ship's aerodynamic controls to damp that dizzying roll. [Mike Melville Rolls in SpaceShipOne (Video)]

What we could not see and could not have known (except Neil) was that out there, climbing past 250,000 feet over the Mojave, Melville was doing battle with roll rates upward of 180 degrees per second. Neil knew Mike?s world was literally flipping upside down every 2-3 seconds, and that Melville would have to block out disorientation while brain-working his way through a shift from correcting with flight control surfaces (in atmosphere) to correcting with thrusters (in vacuum).

In true "Right Stuff" fashion, Melville let the rolling continue as he climbed. He even let it roll while he reconfigured SpaceShipOne to its feathered?"shuttlecock" re-entry mode. Then he methodically and minimally damped it out, knowing that the feathered surfaces could also play a stabilizing role. (Melville would later comment that the roll was "pretty cool.")

As the vehicle ? which would fly again the following week to claim the Ansari X Prize ? made its way back into breathable space, Neil turned to our group. "I had one like that on the X-15," he said.

Armstrong explained to us that in such vehicles, the pilot's manually flown angle of attack is extremely critical to preventing any lack of symmetry in the motor's thrust from turning into "mission-threatening" rolls; and it makes a big difference in maximizing the final altitude of the ballistic arc.

Back on April 20, 1962, during a test of the X-15 rocket plane? in many ways, the direct ancestor of SpaceShipOne ? Neil had literally skipped off the atmosphere. His flight track ballooned far to the south of its plan, sailing over Pasadena and northern Los Angeles, before he got his ship turned around and down onto the dry lakebed of Edwards Air Force Base. At 12.5 minutes, it would be the longest flight of that X-15 program.

With those memories near to him that day at SPACE.com, Neil Armstrong could not have been less jealous, or more complimentary, of Scaled Composites' pilots and engineers.

Neil has been called a "pilot's pilot" and "an engineer's engineer." ?For so many of us, has was so much more.

"Vaginismus" A Psychological Condition That Affects Womens ...

?"Vaginismus" A Psychological Condition That Affects Womens Sexuality. Are You Aware of it?

A woman's virginity has long been a cultural fixation. From abstinence pledges and purity balls ? wherein teenage girls promise their Evangelical fathers they'll remain virgins until marriage ? to the abject quackery that suggests virginity causes cancer, many people are quick to take sides in the imaginary moral war.

But I am quick to dismiss any discussion of morality, as I often find myself counselling some of the unwitting casualties.

While saving oneself for marriage is a personal choice, there is an unexpected condition that can affect some women who are waiting for Mr Right ? vaginismus.

Vaginismus is not due to a physical abnormality. Some women wonder if their vagina is too small or they have no vaginal opening at all and that is the reason why sex is so difficult. But in most cases the vagina is perfectly normal and would be capable of intercourse without pain, if the pelvic floor muscles could be relaxed.

Described as an involuntary contraction of the muscles surrounding the entrance to the vagina, it can make penetration either painful or impossible and cause much distress to the individual.

Women who suffer from vaginismus find that attempts at sexual intercourse are very painful or unsuccessful. This involuntary contraction of the muscles surrounding the entrance to the vagina, makes the muscles around the vagina shut down and prevents her partner from penetrating, it feels like he has hit a brick wall.

Thought to affect at least 2 to 4 per cent of ?women generally, it's more common among women who are saving themselves for marriage. It is also commonly seen in women, who due to religious or cultural reasons, have developed an overriding fear of penetrative sex.

To suggest that if you wanted to remain a virgin you are going to end up with vaginismus wouldn't be right.?

It's mainly the fear of sexual intercourse.

It can and does effect women brought up in restrictive religious environments who can develop unhealthy attitudes toward sex.

Any sex before marriage is considered dirty, filthy, mortal sin, etcetera. But in marriage it is beautiful, it's God's gift.

And women believe this stuff, they believe that sex is grubby on the morning of their wedding day, but by evening the earth will move and fireworks will go off.

Which rarely happens!

More serious than a lacklustre sexual experience, women who suffer from vaginismus often feel confused and inadequate, which only compounds the disorder's psychological underpinning.

This is the most extreme sexual problem because they're not having no orgasm with sex or whatever, they're not having sex.?

It's a devastating problem.?

And many of these women will say, 'What did I save myself for?'"?

As this often will be experienced on, or after, the wedding night one can imagine how distressing this is for a couple who just can't understand what is happening to them. They waited so long and now sex is impossible and they are not able to consummate their marriage. Also the women often believe it is their fault and blame themselves or their partner who will then feel frustrated, rejected or inadequate.

It is also such a taboo topic that they often are too embarrassed to discuss the issue with their family or friends and suffer in silence. Some couples take years before they finally look for help.

While a religious upbringing is a common thread found in many cases, it's not the only link. Women subjected to sexual abuse can develop similar problems, as can individuals who have developed a fear of childbirth.

Some women have a fear of childbirth, primarily due to the pain. I've seen women come to see me whose mothers have died giving birth to them. Think about that algorithm: sex, pregnancy, childbirth, death. You've got the devil's job in psychotherapy to get them away from this notion of sex and death.

Though the issue is common, many women are reluctant to seek treatment and those that do are often steered in the wrong direction by doctors who aren't educated on the subject.

I know of some women who have been misdiagnosed by unskilled or unscrupulous physicians who suggest they undergo a hymenectomy - or Fenton's procedure ? to widen the entrance to the vagina.?

I also suggests that some specialists are even partially responsible for it in the first place, citing how a heavy-handed bedside manner can lead to long-lasting insecurities.

If someone says during a vaginal examination, "Oh, gee, you're small down here. You're going to have trouble down here when you want to have babies,"?some women store that away and talk themselves into it."?

Not the best way to assure a woman who already has difficulties with her self esteem and mental well-being!

The condition is treatable.?

The first step towards treating the problem, is to help an individual become more knowledgeable and comfortable about her own body.?

While many of my more religious clients are intelligent and educated they're not always so well informed when it comes to their own bodies.

Vaginismus is reasonably easy to overcome the more they understand.

I suggest that they get a mirror and look at their vagina because many of these women have never seen it before ... I treat by counselling, education, anxiety reduction, pelvic floor exercises and retraining of pelvic floor muscles. It may take some months of physiotherapy sessions and practice at home but the success rate of therapy is very high when individuals and couples commit to treatment.

?

One of my previous counselling clients, ?a 21-year-old girl who comes from a strict religious back ground.?Had previously visited her GP after she found out that it was impossible to have penetrative sex with her boyfriend. This GP, who obviously did not recognise the nature of her problem, referred the young woman to a gynaecologist.?

My client was devastated, the thought of having an operation on "that part" of her body made her petrified.?

We had a counselling session where I made her aware of the condition called ??vaginismus? and how it affects women and that the condition was fully treatable without the need of any surgery.

As it is a ?psychological? condition and fully treatable

Needless to say she was greatly relieved and undertook a four month treatment program with me and was eventually able to enjoy full sexual intercourse with her boy friend.?

Please note here, I suggested that her boyfriend be involved in this process to which she agreed.?

Not only did he become educated about the condition she was suffering from, he was fully supportive of her and helped with my guidance, to overcome her fears of anxiety around penetrative sexual intercourse.

With the boyfriend being involved and him being supportive it helped build trust and deepen the intimacy in their relationship and the bond between them stronger and more loving.

Both sexually experienced and inexperienced women can develop vaginismus.?

Primary vaginismus occurs when a woman has never, at any time, been able to have pain-free intercourse.?

They often are unable to insert anything: the doctor's finger or speculum, when they need a Pap smear or vaginal examination; their own or partner's finger; or even a tampon.

Secondary vaginismus occurs when a woman who previously has enjoyed intercourse without pain, develops the condition later.?

It can be triggered by a traumatic experience like a difficult child birth, sexual assault or painful experiences with intercourse due to underlying conditions such endometriosis, pelvic or vaginal infections, low sexual arousal with lack of lubrication, menopausal dryness or other vulva conditions.

Vaginismus is treated by counselling, education, anxiety reduction, pelvic floor exercises and retraining of the pelvic floor muscles.?

Psycho sexual education is important as it is essential that the woman gains knowledge of her sexual anatomy. Women who suffer from vaginismus are often raised in moral or religious homes, schools or institutions and, after a childhood of anti-sexual messages, it can be very difficult to face sexual interaction and accept sexual pleasure, even within a loving relationship.

Through counselling by an experienced sex therapist, the sufferer is able to free herself of the negative moral understandings that contribute to her condition.?Post counselling I refer my clients to an experienced pelvic floor physiotherapist who specialises in this area. The treatment of vaginismus involves unlearning the fear-contraction reflex and learning to keep the pelvic floor muscles relaxed during intercourse.

Successful treatment does not require drugs, surgery or any complex invasive techniques.?

Some plastic surgeons have been injecting Botox, a procedure that none of my clients ever contemplated and, in my opinion, should be regarded as a last resort.

What can men do to help their wives/partners through vaginismus?

Men can help their partners in many ways through the process of successfully overcoming vaginismus.

When the trial of vaginismus hits, men often feel helpless, thinking ?What can I do about it??

Vaginismus, however, is not just a woman?s problem ? it is a couple?s problem.

The truth is there are a number of things men can do to help.?

By becoming educated about the dynamics of vaginismus and being emotionally supportive of their partners, men can help their spouses to be more positive and proceed through treatment more quickly.?

The trial may be hard to endure, but it is not hopeless. Once the condition is diagnosed and treatment begins, success is the likely outcome.

Some of the ways men can help their partners include:

1. Being supportive ? A supportive, loving relationship based on encouragement and mutual respect provides an excellent backdrop for a woman to work through the program. It can be physically and emotionally draining for women to walk through some of the steps alone. When men encourage and support their partners, it allows them to focus on the program instead of on immediate relationship concerns. Supportcan be paramount to a woman?s success. Men should consider simply asking their spouses how they would like them to be involved. By participating in and helping with the treatment, spouses have the opportunity to be part of something that draws them closer as a couple. It can be an incredible opportunity and feeling to be part of another?s healing process, especially when the other person is someone deeply cared for.

2. Walking the steps together ? Men can help their spouses by walking together with them through each step of the treatment. Working through the steps together helps men fully understand the mechanics of treatment and aids them in understanding where their partners are both emotionally and physically. Helping their partners work through areas of fear and confusion heightens bonds of trust as couples get to know each other in more intimate ways going beyond intercourse. When men become educated about vaginismus themselves, they are able to talk to their partners knowledgeably and rationally. Men can help their partners stay motivated, focused and moving forward through emotional hurdles, stress and feelings of failure. Participating willingly and knowledgeably in those exercises that involve them directly also helps smooth the transition from painful intercourse or penetration problems.

3. Celebrating success ? What may seem like a small step to men may actually be a huge victory to women going through treatment for vaginismus. Small gifts such as going out to dinner, buying a small present, writing a congratulation note, or giving a massage, etc. may help encourage women through the process. Celebrating and making each victory feel special will help spouses to view the process as being worth the challenge. When men are showing interest and positive excitement about progress it helps women stay motivated to continue moving forward.

4. Staying positive and patient ? As men often await anxiously for their spouses to progress through steps, there is a tendency to project pressure and negativity which can play on their spouse?s feelings of stress and failure. Men should try to stay positive and patient in their attitude, maintaining a hopeful, balanced outlook. Being strong and steady, during periods where spouses feel weak or vulnerable, creates an assured environment that helps women to feel more confident and hopeful.

5. Continuing to be intimate ? We urge couples to continue to share an intimate lifestyle even if intercourse is not possible yet (note that during early steps of the program intercourse should not attempted). Complete avoidance of sexual contact generally amplifies relational troubles and makes the problems worse. Without physical contact, feelings of fear, shame, guilt, or rejection tend to accumulate.?

6. Men can attempt to foster a continuous, viable sex life, temporarily without intercourse, by seeking alternative ways to give and accept pleasure with their spouses. One of the positive aspects of vaginismus for couples is learning to please each other in ways not previously considered. Sensual body touch and manual stimulation can reduce tension and form trust. While going through the early treatment steps, it is best to remove the pressure to perform penetrative intercourse from the sexual equation, however it is important to form intimate bonds through other sexual intimacy options.

7. Not becoming overly passive ? There is a tendency for men with spouses facing vaginismus to become overly passive and to ?bury? their sexual nature and desires for intimacy. When attempts to consummate or develop sexual intimacy fail and cause their spouses ongoing anxiety or sadness, there is a natural tendency to bury these desires to avoid further anguish. If men become overly passive, they may not advocate for their own needs and if continued may allow their spouses to procrastinate on treatment and amplify relational problems.?

I recommend that men try to calmly, but firmly, encourage their spouses to move forward with treatment. Men need to advocate for themselves too, and insist for resolution of the sexual component for the relationship to function properly on a long-term basis.?

As vaginismus treatment is highly successful, it is unnecessary for men to take a position of life-long suffering and sacrifice.?

Sexless marriages generally weigh heavily on both partners and usually result in failed relationships and/or emotional damage if nothing is done to restore the sexual component and bring healing. For these reasons, we encourage men to take responsibility and continue gently advocating for restoration.

A Positive Future

Fortunately, vaginismus is a condition that has positive treatment solutions (as opposed to other debilitating conditions with few treatment options). Couples are elated at reaching treatment completion and pain and penetration problems are no longer an issue. For previously unconsummated couples, going from impossible intercourse to having full, pain free intercourse is a realistic, normal outcome.

Going through the trials of vaginismus can definitely test a relationship, but successfully going through treatment together can also strengthen it. Encouragement, love, patience, and communication can go a long way in helping to sustain relationships. By overcoming together, couples will be able to begin afresh in creating new and pleasurable sexual experiences and enjoy a strengthened relationship in the process.

I would like to make the public and the media aware of this condition as I realise that very few people know about it.

I also would like to hear from women who have had bad experiences.

Next time when you have an appointment with your GP or gynaecologist, ask them if they know what vaginismus is?

Unhappy Marriage? Try Sex Therapy

Sex provides a couple with pleasure, vulnerability and a deep, close connection that is very important to experience in an intimate partnership.?

It's also an important time-out and stress reliever from the mundane tasks and pressures of daily life. An unfulfilled sex life can become a big issue that can erode even the healthy parts of your marriage.?

If you or your partner is having sexual issues, it is best to deal with them directly, honestly -- and with the help of a professional.

Sex therapy is a specific type of therapy for couples and individuals that focuses on the sexual functioning of either the couple or an individual.?

When some couples deal with conflict and communication issues within their relationship, their sexual lives become more active and connected because of the increase in positive, loving feelings for their partner.?

Other couples, however, find that the real problem is not communication or conflict, but simply sexual dysfunction. These couples need a very direct approach, with concrete homework and an increased understanding of human sexuality.

Sex therapists have a much higher degree of knowledge than most about the physiological processes that are a part of human sexuality.?

In a very small number of cases, a separate "sexual surrogate" therapist may be needed, but most often, sex therapy is talk therapy with a cognitive-behavioral leaning, which can include homework assignments for one or both members of the couple.

So: How can sex therapy help you.?

Here's a short list:

People with sexual-identity issues.

Couples who want to increase sexual intimacy.

People who want to deal with sexual inhibitions.

People who are dissatisfied with their sexual functioning (i.e., they have erectile dysfunction or low libido, vaginismus).

Couples wanting to increase their communication about sexuality.

Google+ ready for business with IT-friendly bells and whistles ...

Google is rolling out business-friendly features for its Google+ social networking service. That paves the way for a paid-version next year or beyond and escalates the battle between Google and Microsoft for the corporate desktop.

Google is now pushing its Google+ social networking platform as part of its?business-focused software. That should come as no surprise. It?s been apparent for months that Google was linking Google+ to everything and tightening ties between its social network?and the Google Apps suite of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.

As of Wednesday, the company launched a set of new features for business users and is previewing them for Google Apps customers. Use of the features will be free through the end of next year, according to the Google Enterprise Blog.

There are the usual nods to IT. Administrators can now set company?defaults for post restrictions?and?enable restricted Hangouts?to facilitate private company-only meetings.

And Google Apps users will now get more control over the content they put on Google+. They can mark some posts as ?restricted? which means they will remain private to the user?s organization and cannot be shared outside. And, Google Hangout video meetings are integrated with Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs.

Google Apps, the company?s response to the Microsoft Office juggernaut, used to be perceived as a lightweight among business users, but it has gotten considerable traction and has forced Microsoft to respond with Office 365. ?Companies like Backupify are banking big that Google Apps momentum will continue ? offering ancillary services to the product.

Small companies and startups like the low price of Google+ and especially its Google Hangouts, which enables up to 10 people to video chat easily. Hangouts poses a challenge to Skype, which?Microsoft bought last year and is busily tying it into its Office franchise.?It?s also a way for Google to differentate Google+, which has met mixed reviews, from Facebook which has much less a business focus.

The fact that Google is touting Google+ for business users means that it will eventually start charging for the service, just as it morphed the freebie Google Apps into a commercial offering.

[BIR Press Release] Ex-CJ Corona's daughter charged with tax ...

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) today filed a criminal complaint with the Department of Justice against MA. CARLA BEATRIZ C. CASTILLO (CASTILLO) for willful attempt to evade or defeat tax and for deliberate failure to file her Income Tax Return (ITR), for taxable year 2010, in violation of Section 254 and Section 255 of the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997, as amended (Tax Code).

CASTILLO, daughter of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato C. Corona, is a registered taxpayer of Revenue District Office No. 39, South Quezon City with addresses at #20 Kalayaan Avenue, Diliman, Quezon City and/or 27 Abada Street, Xavierville Subdivision, Loyola Heights, Quezon City.

Records of the BIR showed that CASTILLO declared in her ITR for 2008 and 2009 a cumulative income amounting to P228,040.00. On the other hand, information from documents gathered disclosed that CASTILLO acquired in 2010 a property located at 57 Maranao Street, La Vista, Quezon City for P18 million for which she paid Documentary Stamp Tax (DST) of P329,000.00.

Investigation revealed that CASTILLO deliberately failed to file her ITR with the BIR in 2010 despite receipt of substantial amounts of income as manifested by her ability to acquire property and pay the amount of P18.33 million.

BIR investigators used the Expenditures Method of tax investigation to show that CASTILLO substantially underdeclared her income. The method is based on the theory that if a subject taxpayer?s expenditures during a given year exceed her reported income and the source of the funds used to make the expenditures is unexplained, it may be inferred that such expenditures represent unreported income.

Under the said method, CASTILLO?s cumulative income of P228,040.00 as declared in her ITRs for taxable years 2008 to 2009 compared with her expenditure of P18.33 million in 2010 clearly indicated a difference of P18.1 million or a 7,938% underdeclaration. The said difference constitutes substantial underdeclaration of more than 30% and is considered as prima facie evidence of fraud tantamount to tax evasion.

CASTILLO was sued for a total income tax liability of P9.93 million, inclusive of increments, for taxable year 2010.

The case against MA. CARLA BEATRIZ C. CASTILLO is the 123rd filed under the Run After Tax Evaders (RATE) program of the BIR under the leadership of Commissioner Kim S. Jacinto-Henares. (reytdlc)

GOP convention team reaches out to women, vets

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? With the Republican National Convention at last in full-throated roar, nominee Mitt Romney and his team reached out Wednesday to critical voting groups ? veterans, Hispanics and women ? while gleefully mocking the man he is out to defeat in November.

The GOP nominee ducked out of his own convention in Tampa to tell the American Legion Convention in Indianapolis that a Romney administration would do better by a military threatened with "reckless" defense cuts and by veterans hungry for jobs.

"This president's biggest failure is that he's not delivered those jobs," Romney said. "As president, I will get America to work again."

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a top Hispanic voice in the GOP, made the rounds of morning talk shows to defend the GOP nominee's policies. And Ann Romney and Janna Ryan, the wife of Romney's running mate, teamed up to headline a "Women for Romney" fundraiser.

At the women's event, Mrs. Romney offered her husband as "the one person who is going to turn this country around," and promised that her husband would keep in mind the needs of women and families, if elected. Later, she attended a Latino Coalition lunch, where son Craig addressed guests in Spanish, and described his father as "a man you can trust."

Mrs. Romney told the Latino crowd that Democrats try to make it look like Republicans "don't care about this community. That's not true. We very much care about this community."

Latinos, she said, "are mistaken if they think they are going to be better off" if President Barack Obama wins re-election, she said.

The politics played out as Hurricane Isaac blew ashore on the Gulf Coast, weakening to a tropical storm by afternoon. Officials in Louisiana said that New Orleans' flood protection system was holding up as Isaac moved through the area.

Romney opened his remarks to the veterans by saying that while it appeared Isaac would not inflict the kind of damage Hurricane Katrina caused seven years ago, "this must be a heavy burden."

"Our country must do all we can to help them recover," he said.

Obama, campaigning before a college crowd in Charlottesville, Va., pledged that the government was "doing every single thing we need to do to make sure the folks down there are taken care of."

The president declared himself unimpressed with the GOP show unfolding in Tampa.

"You can listen very carefully, very hard, and you won't hear them offer a clear serious path forward," he said.

The main draw for Wednesday night's convention session is vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, the 42-year-old Wisconsin congressman and author of a tough budget that remakes the way the government spends money.

"I think people are going to like what they see because we are offering specific, bold solutions to get people back to work, to get this country back on the right track," Ryan said in a taped interview with WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee.

Ryan tested the microphones in the convention hall at midday as his children had fun at the podium.

Rubio, interviewed on "CBS This Morning," held out Ryan as a serious policy thinker who's "going to have a bunch of new fans across this country" after he speaks.

But Obama's re-election campaign released an online video casting Ryan, who is hugely popular with conservatives, as a politician from a "bygone era" whose budget proposals threaten Medicare and would gut funding for Planned Parenthood.

A poll by the Pew Research Center and The Washington Post found Americans deeply divided about Ryan, whom they described as conservative, intelligent, fake, phony.

Romney's nomination now official, he was free at last to start dipping into his general-election pot of campaign cash.

"We're excited that now he's going to be able to spend money, both in English and in Spanish, to explain to people how his policies will help grow the economy, help small business, help people have the confidence to invest in the future," Rubio said."

To ensure the cash keeps rolling in, Ann Romney emailed supporters a fundraising appeal that echoed her Tuesday night speech to the convention.

"This man will not fail," she promised in the plea.

Obama, courting young voters for a second straight day, exhorted a crowd near the University of Virginia not to lose sight of the vision of hope and change that he laid out four years ago, citing policies he's implemented like student loan reforms and middle-class tax cuts.

"You can't get tired now, because we've got more work to do," he told the students.

Beyond Ryan, Wednesday's lineup includes 2008 Republican presidential candidate John McCain and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Romney speaks Thursday night to bring down the curtain-closing balloons. Obama's Democratic National Convention follows next week in Charlotte, N.C.

Rice, warming up for her speech in an appearance on "CBS This Morning," said the voice of the United States in world affairs "has been muted" under this president, creating a chaotic and dangerous security environment.

Romney hit the same tone before the veterans.

"In the past four years, President Obama has allowed our leadership to diminish," he said. "In dealings with other nations, he has given trust where it is not earned, insult where it is not deserved and apology where it's not due."

Opinion polls show Obama getting high marks on national security after ending the war in Iraq, drawing down the conflict in Afghanistan and ordering the killing of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

Obama's allies did their best to counter Romney and the Republicans.

Obama campaign spokesman Jen Psaki called Romney and Ryan "the two most unpopular presidential nominee and vice presidential nominee in modern history. They have two days to rebrand who they are, what they stand for."

She said of Mrs. Romney's appeal to women: "Surrounding yourself with strong women is a great thing, but it doesn't change your positions."

First lady Michelle Obama, on her own outreach campaign, traveled to New York to promote her healthy-living initiatives while visiting "The Dr. Oz Show" and Rachael Ray's talk show. The programs will air next month, closer to the election.

Mrs. Obama also was making a guest appearance on Wednesday's "Late Show with David Letterman."

Among veterans, Gallup's tracking poll over the month of August has shown Romney leads Obama, 55 percent to 38 percent.

Obama has the advantage among women, and Hispanics strongly favor Obama.

Romney and his party have been seeking to win a bigger share of Hispanic votes by emphasizing proposals to fix the economy rather than ease their positions on immigration.

Polls find the economy is overwhelmingly the dominant issue in the race and voters narrowly favor Romney to handle it. In an AP-GfK poll taken Aug. 16-20, some 48 percent of registered voters said they trust Romney more on economic issues, to 44 percent for Obama. However, a Washington Post-ABC News in the days immediately before the convention found that 61 percent of registered voters said Obama was more likable, while 27 percent said Romney.

RadioShack No Contract Wireless rate plans leak, $60 will get you everything

RadioShack No Contract Wireless rate plans leak

We're just about a week out from the rumored launch of RadioShack's Cricket-based No Contract Wireless plans, and more details are beginning to trickle out about the prepaid service. Specifically, we've just received information concerning how much The Shack intends to charge on a monthly basis, and it's just about what you'd expect: you can choose between featurephone and smartphone options, with the former hooking you up with unlimited messaging and your choice of 300 minutes for $25 or 1,000 minutes for $35. As for the smartphone plans, you'll get unlimited voice, messaging and Muve Music downloads on both selections; the $50 option will get you one gigabyte of 3G data (before throttling ensues), while $60 bestows you with 2.5GB data and mobile hotspot use, Visual Voicemail access, unlimited international text and all-you-can-eat directory assistance.

As a comparison, Cricket's $35 featurephone plan will give you unlimited voice and SMS, compared to 1,000 minutes and unlimited SMS / MMS / 1X data on The Shack. The carrier's basic smartphone option is $55 and offers unlimited voice, messaging and 3G data (throttled at 2.5GB); this may seem like the better deal -- unless you're interested in using Muve Music. Since you have to pay an extra $10 to add the unlimited music service into the mix on Cricket, you'll see a monthly savings of $5 if you waltz into The Shack for the top-tiered plan. We're still waiting for RadioShack to come clean and acknowledge the existence of the NoContract service, but we'll continue to reveal more details as they come down the pipeline. Check out the featurephone rate plans after the break.

U.S. colleges see opportunity as Brazil sends students abroad

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. colleges, holding onto a shrinking lead as the world's biggest educator of international students, are eyeing a promising new market in Brazil, an emerging economy with big hopes for the future but a shortage of skilled labor.

U.S. Commerce Undersecretary Francisco Sanchez will lead officials from 66 U.S. colleges and universities to Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro beginning Thursday on what he told Reuters is the biggest trade mission of the Obama administration.

The seven-day visit capitalizes on Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff's "Science Without Borders" initiative aimed at reducing her nation's skills deficit by sending as many as 101,000 students to study abroad over the next four years.

"She's stated publicly that she wants half of those to go to the United States and specifically to study in the STEM areas: science, technology, engineering and math," Sanchez said.

Brazil's skilled-worker shortage is a major challenge on the country's path to developed-nation status. In addition to spurring Brazil to seek educational opportunities abroad, the shortage has encouraged the government to explore ways to ease immigration rules to attract more foreign professionals.

In sectors ranging from construction and oil exploration to telecommunications, companies complain of not being able to find qualified applicants in Brazil to fill jobs.

U.S. MARKET SHARE SHRINKING

While Brazil's own universities are graduating an increasing number of students, many still lack the necessary skills to compete internationally, said Jo?o de Castro Neves, a Latin American analyst at the Eurasia group in Washington.

"It's basically a matter of quality, not only at the universities but at the primary schools and the secondary schools," Castro Neves said.

The Science Without Borders program, which provides scholarships for Brazilians to study abroad for one year, meshes with the Obama administration's drive to attract more foreign students as part of its effort to double exports.

"Our higher education system is recognized around the world as being one of very high quality, of being of great value and so we want to promote it," said Sanchez, who led an education trade mission last year to Indonesia and Vietnam.

About 650 Brazilian students started U.S. studies under the program in January, and that was followed by a second wave of more than 1,500 students for U.S. summer and autumn course work.

Over the past decade, the U.S. share of the international education market has fallen to 20 percent from 28 percent, as schools in China, Canada, Britain, Australia, France and Japan have increased enrollment.

But U.S. colleges and universities still attract more foreign students than other national systems, and enrollment hit a record 723,277 in 2010-11, up 32 percent from 2000-01.

Foreign students pay the full "out-of-state" cost of a college education, helping schools meet their bottom line.

They represented about 3.5 percent of total enrollment of 20.5 million in 2010-11. Their top fields of study are business and management, engineering, math and computer sciences, and physical and life sciences.

The Commerce Department, which more typically leads trade missions to sell energy equipment or construction services, is involved in promoting education because services sold to overseas students count as exports in national trade tallies. The United States raked in $21 billion in tuition and living expenses paid by foreign students in the 2010-11 academic year.

But only $257 million, from 8,777 students, came from Brazil, the sixth-largest economy in the world. That was just 1.2 percent of the U.S. international student body that year.

"Given the size of Brazil, that should be much larger," Sanchez said. "Our interests are very much aligned here."

China and India, which Brazil sees as rivals for status and innovation on the international stage, sent 157,558 and 103,895 students, respectively, to the United States in 2010-11, accounting for about 36 percent of foreign students here.

BIG TUITION COSTS

Both those countries have a growing middle class and a lot more people willing to spend $200,000 or $300,000 to send their child to school in the United States, said Allan Goodman, president of the Institute of International Education, a U.S. non-profit group that promotes international study.

"They may not own a home ... but they have money, and they're saving it for an education," Goodman said.

He called Brazil's program "brilliant" because it ensures the students have to return home to get their degree. They come to the United States for their third year of university study and transfer those credits back to Brazil.

The U.S. delegation includes small schools such as Emporia State University in central Kansas and large ones such as Michigan State University. Other schools include Rutgers University in New Jersey, the University of Southern California, Texas A&M and the Savannah College of Art & Design in Georgia.

One big obstacle Brazilian students face is the language barrier since they are less likely to know English than their Indian or Chinese counterparts, said Maria de los Angeles Crummett, associate vice president for global affairs at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Brazilian students, whose native tongue is Portuguese, often have more of a cultural attraction to Europe, which is a challenge for U.S. schools to overcome, Crummett said.

The U.S. State Department is helping to tackle that problem through an intensive English immersion program to prepare Brazilian students for studying in the United States. The Obama administration has also sought to attract more Brazilians to the United States by easing visa requirements for them.

The former Republican made the announcement in an op-ed piece published in Sunday's Tampa Bay Times. The endorsement came as Republicans are gathering in the Tampa Bay area for the GOP convention. It also came amid preparations statewide for Tropical Storm Isaac.

Crist left the Republican Party during his unsuccessful bid for a US Senate seat in 2010 and is currently registered as having no party affiliation. He was elected governor of Florida as a Republican in 2006.

In the Tampa Bay Times article, Crist wrote he's "confident that President Barack Obama is the right leader for our state and the nation."

GOP Chairman Lenny Curry says Crist's "political ambition will always come before the needs of Floridians."

Los Angeles Educational facilities Welcome Back The Arts

Los Angeles Schools are seeing a gradual improve in arts training as the dual result of a protracted-term program and recent state funding. The Arts for All program was initiated in 2002 as a 10-yr plan to restore arts schooling to the 80 districts of Los Angeles Schools. The challenge focuses on bringing music, dance, drama and the visible arts to Ok-12 faculties within the area. 9 colleges have just signed up for the 2007-2008 school yr, bringing the overall variety of Los Angeles Schools involved up to 27.

Two of the newest individuals are the Lancaster and Palmdale districts of Los Angeles Schools. Each schools completely eradicated their elementary music packages within the final decade on account of finances cuts and increased pressure to perform on state tests. Major cuts first began for Los Angeles Schools with Proposition thirteen in 1978. This California mandate decreased property taxes and district funds, which required all Los Angeles Colleges to scale back or eliminate arts and physical education classes.

Los Angeles Colleges have been happy when the state introduced funding of $500 million for art, music and bodily training classes at first of June. Los Angeles Colleges will use much of these funds for the Arts for All Program. Arts for All is constructed on a five-step process which, whereas proven efficient, costs money. The five steps concerned are:

1. Allocating 5% of a district?s price range to arts training 2. Having a board adopted coverage 3. Creating an implementation plan with a timeline 4. Assigning a district stage arts coordinator 5. Sustaining a student to arts trainer ratio of 400:1

Los Angeles Schools pays for a program expert to information dad and mom, staff and neighborhood members in the creation of their implementation plan. The Lancaster district has a further grant of $260,000 for its art and music programs.

Los Angeles Schools welcome the increased funding as a protracted overdue measure. Many educators in the Los Angeles Schools have lamented the loss of the arts as dangerous to pupil development. Whereas lots of the cuts to arts education end result from diverting funds to cowl tutorial subjects wanted to cross state assessments, lecturers argue that artwork really enhances learning, permits youngsters to make connections between subjects, and gives an a lot needed steadiness to education.

Like the remainder of the country?s urban districts Los Angeles Colleges are trying to satisfy the 2014 No Youngster Left Behind requirement that mandates proficiency on state tests by all students regardless of developmental delays or language barriers. Diverting funding away from the humanities has put Los Angeles Faculties in a scenario where kids as young as third grade are shedding recess, bodily exercise and a basic arts background in a frenzied scramble to fulfill rising national standards.

On TV, a quiet exit for first man on the moon

NEW YORK (AP) ? By the yardstick of history, Neil Armstrong was among the most accomplished men ever to walk on the planet that he looked upon from afar one magical week in July 1969.

Television news didn't seem to fully recognize the importance of the first human to walk on the moon on the weekend he died.

In the hours after Armstrong's death was announced, news networks were airing canned programming ? jailhouse documentaries, a rerun interview with Rielle Hunter, Mike Huckabee's weekend show. Menacing satellite pictures of Tropical Storm Isaac had much more air time than Armstrong's dusty hops on the lunar surface. Talk of the upcoming GOP national convention sucked up the air.

A trio of factors played in to the lack of attention.

First, Armstrong died in Cincinnati on a Saturday. Not just any Saturday, when news organizations have a skeletal staff, but a late August weekend. Half the country is at the beach. It's not a stretch to think inexperience on duty might have played a role in NBC News' embarrassing gaffe: a website headline that read: "Astronaut Neil Young, first man to walk on the moon, dies at age 82." (NBC called it a staffer error and said the mistake was taken down after seven minutes.)

His death came as somewhat of a surprise, too. Everyone dies, of course, and most news organizations have prepared material on hand to mark the passing of famous people. In many cases, though, there is advance word that someone is very ill, giving the media a chance to prepare and plan.

Armstrong's determined effort to live a quiet, private life after his astronaut days also left TV at a disadvantage. There was relatively little tape on hand to roll from interviews reminiscing about his experiences, reunions with old astronauts or public appearances. No Armstrong chats with David Letterman. No appearances in music videos. There was the moon walk, and not much else.

Notable deaths often give viewers the chance to reflect, to put into perspective lives of great accomplishment or great notoriety.

Not so with Neil Armstrong. His death was like his life: strangely muted given the magnitude of his achievements.

Voice Of Women and Families (VOW India) in India: Gender-neutral ...

True equality is her goal
http://www.deccanheraldepaper.com/svww_zoomart.php?Artname=20120825l_004100004&ileft=627&itop=135&zoomRatio=130&AN=20120825l_004100004

PROFILE Roshni Mathan Pereira is spearheading amovement to bring about reforms in family laws that could help children caught in custody battles when their parents divorce
Roshni Mathan Pereira wears many hats, and with great elan. An educator for many years, she also takes her role as counselor of CRISP (Children?s Rights Initiative for Shared Parenting) very seriously.
Roshni, who is in her late thirties, has a Bachelors degree in Education, a Masters degree in Child Education and an MBA in Educational Management. She has plenty of teaching experience, including as a PYP (Primary Years Programme) coordinator in an international school in Bangalore, and also serves on the board of trustees in a reputed school in Bangalore. Her interests lie in home schooling, e-learning, special education and international curriculum planning.

However, Roshni prefers to talk about her role as counselor of CRISP, a Bangalore-based NGO, that was founded a few years ago by Kumar Jahgirdar, among others, to combat the serious effects of parental alienation on children of divorced/separated parents. CRISP is concerned by the growing number of custody battles over children, and the consequent effect it has on young minds.

The organisation is pushing for reforms in family laws such as granting of immediate and equal child access to separated parents within 30 days from the date of filing for divorce and making co-parenting mandatory. It wants all cases related to custody of children to be disposed of within six months of application and punishment for misuse of laws, particularly related to dowry harassment and domestic violence.

Roshni counsels young men whose wives have resorted to the anti-dowry law and Domestic Violence (DV) Act to harass their husbands and deny them access to their own children. She feels women are, by and large, better communicators and are able to win the sympathy of judges in courts, thanks to their glib talk and persuasive manner. She says that it doesn?t matter if the husband is right ? the courts are almost always swayed by the better communicator (the wife in nearly all cases), even when she is wrong.

Roshni counsels men and young fathers on how to communicate better and get their point across to others so that they can be heard. She says it doesn?t matter if the husband is highly educated. ?All too often, I counsel MBAs and engineers from IITs who are simply unable to correspond effectively,? she says. ?Men need to learn to communicate so that the harassment they are suffering on account of genderbiased laws is brought to light.? Roshni has appeared on many television programmes to voice her demands for children?s rights, and she also wants safeguards to come into place so that men do not have to suffer because of the rampant abuse of laws that were made to protect women, such as Sec 498A IPC and the DV Act. These laws, she feels, are grossly biased against men as husbands who face abuse at the hands of their wives cannot take recourse to the DV Act to demand justice. The anti-dowry law (Sec 498A IPC) is often used by vengeful wives to harass entire families, including aged in-laws, married and pregnant sisters-inlaw and young brothers-in-law, apart from the husband. And, thanks to our judicial system, the courts take many years to deliver a verdict. Convictions in cases filed under these Acts are low, and many times innocent people have to run from pillar to post, and putting their lives on hold for many years, to prove themselves not guilty.

India is a secular democracy and everybody should stand equal before the law, says Roshni. But the laws of the land have been heavily tilted against men and in favour of women, especially in the marital sphere. For instance, even when a man declines dowry, the girl often comes with abaggage of wealth. If anything goes wrong, it is the husband and his family who get the legal boot. ?I?m a warrior for women?s rights, but I strongly believe that agood number of men are suffering ignominies for no fault of theirs,? she adds.

Roshni says the National Commission for Women, and Health and Family Welfare both deal with issues confronting women. However, forget a ministry, there is not even a platform for men. She believes that there must be more awareness that men are not always aggressors who ill-treat women. They often share responsibility for the entire family. They ought to get equal justice at the hands of society, the judiciary and the media. ?This is an argument for gender parity, not dominance,? she adds.

Roshni is also concerned about daughters facing abuse, deprivation, neglect and maltreatment in their natal homes. She has launched the ?All India Daughters Protection Forum? and regularly blogs on how children, especially daughters, need to be protected from exploitative parents, relatives and siblings. She wants inheritance rights for daughters in their parental homes and she is also demanding an integrated approach to the protection of the rights of daughters. The forum, Roshni says, is also against false allegations of domestic violence and dowry against husbands and in-laws. False charges, says Roshni, is tantamount to legal abuse and is an affront to real victims.

Roshni hopes to continue blogging and counselling until any real change comes about towards the problems of men in society. This is one determined lady who has vowed to make a difference.

Cornell University Athletics - Eleven To Join Cornell Athletics Hall of ...

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Eleven new members, including seven All-Americans, have been selected for induction into the Cornell University Athletic Hall of Fame at the 36th annual ceremonies to be held Friday, Nov. 2 on the Cornell campus. After this year's class is inducted, the membership in the Hall will stand at 543.

The All-Americans who will be inducted are Max King '02, men's cross country and track and field; Tom Nuttle '51, lacrosse; Olga Puidgemont-Sola '02, squash; Jaimee Reynolds '02, lacrosse and volleyball; Melissa Riggs '02, polo; Matt Underhill '02, ice hockey; and Frank Wydo '50, football.

Also selected to be enshrined in November are Chuck Feeney '56, special category; Bill Lazor '94, football; Julie Platt '97, softball; and Roger Weiss '61, special category .

In addition to the formal induction ceremonies on Friday evening, the honorees will be recognized at halftime of the Cornell-Dartmouth football game on Saturday afternoon.

The Cornell Athletic Hall of Fame was initiated in 1978. It became a reality through the thoughtfulness and generosity of the late Ellis H. Robison '18, whose devotion, advice and financial support to his alma mater started immediately upon graduation from the university.

A brief biography of each of the 11 inductees follows.

    Chuck Feeney '56, Special Category
Feeney is a Presidential Councillor, lifetime member of Cornell University Council, and a member of the School of Hotel Administration's Dean's Advisory Board. As the founder of The Atlantic Philanthropies, he is one of the world's greatest philanthropists, having made gifts of $6 billion over the past three decades to support people and causes worldwide. Feeney has included his alma mater generously in his support, and the Department of Athletics & Physical Education is fortunate to be a significant beneficiary. Through Atlantic, Feeney made a number of landmark gifts that have strengthened the athletics programs, including a $10 million grant in 1999 to allow Athletics & Physical Education to pursue its Cornell Victorious campaign?focused on infrastructure improvements and endowment?while enjoying the benefits of that campaign immediately through an influx of current-use support. The impact of Cornell Victorious cannot be overstated. In the 10-year period starting with the 1992-93 school year, Big Red teams won a total of 22 Ivy League championships. In the 10-year span starting in 2002-03?thanks to Atlantic's gift and the support it inspired from others?the Big Red won 69 Ivy titles, a 214 percent increase. Feeney and Atlantic have also provided generous support for Bartels Hall and athletics facilities on North Campus, ensuring that Cornell students across the university have access to superior facilities and programs.

Max King '02, Cross Country & Track and Field
An All-American and Heptagonal and IC4A champion in the steeplechase, King excelled on the track and on the trail. He won the World Mountain Running Championship in 2011 in Albania, becoming the first American to capture the title in 14 years, while also capturing the Xterra Trail Run World Championships in 2008, 2009 and 2010. In 2010, King was 16th in the World Mountain Running Championships, first in the US 1/2 Marathon Trail Championships, second at the US 50K Trail Championships and sixth at the Baltimore Marathon. His time of 2:15 at the marathon earned him a second bid to the U.S. Marathon Trials.
