First Meteor Shower of 2012 Arrives Next Week (SPACE.com)

In 2011, most of the best meteor showers occurred when the moon was close to full. This natural "light pollution" made the fainter meteors impossible to see.

But 2012 starts out with a fine meteor shower, the Quadrantids, with absolutely no moon to interfere with the viewing. The?Quadrantid meteor shower ?will peak on Jan. 4 at about 2 a.m. EST (0700 GMT).

Meteor showers occur when the Earth passes through fields of debris left behind by comets or asteroids in the past. The result is that, instead of the handful of meteors, or "shooting stars," which can be seen any clear night, we get a "shower" of meteors: dozens or even hundreds of meteors over the course of an evening.

The best known meteor shower of the year is the Perseids, which normally occurs in the second week of August. The other two most reliable meteor showers are the Geminids in mid-December and the Quadrantids in early January. [Amazing Perseid meteor photos]

Most meteor showers are named for the constellations in which their "radiants" are located. These are the points in the sky from which the meteors appear to streak. When we look at the radiant of a meteor shower, we are essentially looking up the track upon which the meteors arrive at Earth, just as we would watch a train coming down a railroad track.

But after what constellation is the Quadrantid meteor shower named?

Strangely enough, it is named for a constellation which no longer exists, Quadrans Muralis, the wall quadrant. This was an instrument used by early astronomers to measure positions in the sky. If you've ever seen a picture of the famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, you've probably seen his wall quadrant. This constellation was named in 1795 by French astronomer J?r?me Lalande, who had a wall quadrant of his own which he decided to immortalize in the sky.

Quadrans Muralis consisted of a faint group of stars between the top of Bootes and the handle of the Big Dipper, now completely forgotten except for its survival in the name of this meteor shower. The?sky map of the 2012 Quadrantid meteor shower ??included with this article shows where to look to see the shooting star display.?

The comet which created this meteor shower has not been identified for certain, but may have been a comet observed in 1490 by Chinese, Korean, and Japanese astronomers.

Observing a meteor shower is a naked-eye pursuit. The meteors move too fast to be tracked with telescopes or even binoculars. The best way to observe them is to dress warmly and lie back on a deck chair or chaise longue to get as wide a view of the sky as possible.

It?s not necessary to know where the radiant is located, as the meteors can be seen anywhere in the sky. The only important thing is that the radiant be above the horizon. This is not a problem for most observers in North America or Europe since the Quadrantid radiant is circumpolar: it circles the celestial pole and never sets.

You will see more meteors after midnight because of the motion of the Earth. Be sure to protect your eyes from direct light and give your eyes plenty of time to adapt to the darkness, at least 20 minutes.

You may see nothing for some time, but be patient and the meteors will come. Meteors often come in bunches so, if you see one, watch that area more carefully. If you've never observed meteors before, you may think you?re "seeing things" at first, because they often move very fast, and are gone before you can turn your eyes on them.

The Quadrantid shower is unusual for having a very sharp "peak" around 2 a.m. on Jan. 4. Thus it's important to try to observe on this particular date, as the next night will be too late.

Good luck!

Edwin Black: If Iran Moves, the USA Has No Plan for an Oil Interruption

It will come as a shock to most Americans, but no presidential candidate -- nor any candidate, nor any local, state or federal government -- has developed a contingency plan in the event of a protracted oil cut-off. It is not even being discussed. Government has prepared for hurricanes, anthrax, terrorism, and every other disaster, but not the one threatened daily -- a protracted oil stoppage, whether caused by terrorism or Iranian intervention in the Persian Gulf.

It is like seeing a hurricane developing without a disaster plan or evacuation route. Our allies have oil shortage interruption contingency plans, but America does not.

The crude realities: America uses approximately 19 to 20 million barrels of oil per day, almost 70 percent of which is imported. If we lose just 1 million barrels per day, or suffer the type of damage sustained from Hurricane Katrina, the government will open the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which offers a mere 6 to 8 week supply of unrefined crude oil. If we lose 1.5 million barrels per day, or approximately 7.5 percent, we will ask our allies in the 28-member International Energy Agency to open their SPRs and otherwise assist. If we lose 2 million barrels per day, or ten percent for a protracted period of time, government crisis monitors say the chaos will be so catastrophic they cannot even model it. One government oil crisis source told me hours ago, "We cannot put a price tag on it. If it happens, just cash in your 401k."

Exactly how could America be subjected to a protracted oil interruption, that is, a 10 percent shortfall lasting longer than several weeks? It will not come from hurricane action in the Gulf of Mexico, or even major refinery accidents or other oil infrastructure damage. Such damage would be repaired within days and the temporary losses absorbed by the small half million barrel per day global cushion available.

However, if one, two, or all of three of these vital chokepoints are hit by terrorists flying hijacked jumbo jets or shut down by Iranian military action -- the Abqaiq processing plant in eastern Saudi Arabia, the Ras Tanura terminal on Saudi Arabian coast, or the two-mile per sea lane Strait of Hormuz -- as much as 40 percent of all seaborne oil will be stopped, as much as 18 percent of all global supply will be interrupted, and as much as 20 percent of the U.S. supply will be cut off. Estimates on the U.S. shortfall could be even higher. Repeat attacks could prolong the crisis for many months, which is exactly what Al Qaeda and the Iranian regime have promised. Yet there is no government plan.

The best experts predict that if we suffer as much as a ten percent shortfall for any period of time, let alone twenty percent, it will be a neighbor-against-neighbor "Mad Max scenario" as food shortages swell and a storm of economic collapse surges across the country. Indeed, experts have been warning about this looming calamity for years. But the government and presidential candidates refuse to even consider the possibility or develop a contingency plan. Even if a secret plan exists, who would execute such a monumental undertaking?

Yet American allies have developed oil contingency legislation and other administrative plans that will permit their nations to survive a stoppage. These measures include severe vehicle traffic reductions, enabling fast alternative fuel production, mass vehicle fuel retrofitting, as well as rush public transit enhancement and mandated changes in driving habits. Unquestionably, for America to survive such a catastrophe will require a very painful, multi-layered program of immediate-term, short-term, mid-term and long-term fixes that will change our society and transform it off oil. The nation has no real alternative fuel delivery or retrofitting infrastructure. Lawmakers, mayors, governors and candidates have not developed such a plan during the half decade the interruption has been looming.

The notion that Saudi Arabia can make up the shortfall from an Iranian disruption is impossible. Saudi oil disembarks from Ras Tanura and it, too, must pass through the narrow two-mile wide sea lanes of the Strait. For America to have prepared intelligently for a Persian Gulf oil interruption would have required a decade of planning. To absorb the hit from a sudden oil stoppage as is now once again threatened, will be very painful indeed.

Edwin Black is the New York Times best selling investigative author of 'IBM and the Holocaust,' 'Internal Combustion,' 'British Petroleum and the Redline Agreement,' and 'The Plan: How to Save America When the Oil Stops -- or the Day Before' (Dialog Press), from which this article is adapted. More information about The Plan can be found at www.planforoilcrisis.com.

Reports Of Sexual Assault At Military Academies Increase Drastically [Sex Crimes]

Reports Of Sexual Assault At Military Academies Increase DrasticallyToday the Defense Department released its "Annual Report on Sexual Harassment and Violence at the Military Service Academies," which found that during the 2010-2011 academic year there were 65 reports of sexual assault at the three top military academies, up from 41 the previous year. Those are pretty concerning numbers, but the Pentagon has made tackling the problem a priority. Certainly that's why it quickly released this information two days after Christmas, rather than waiting until everyone's back from vacation.

According to the Washington Post, no reason was given for the large jump in reports. However, the Pentagon says it's been encouraging victims to report sexual assaults, so this may just indicate that the message is being received. A spokeswoman for the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, which had 22 reported incidents compared to 11 in the previous year, said that midshipmen are given training on preventing and reporting harassment throughout all four years at the school. Col. Reni Renner, vice commandant culture and climate at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, said, "We believe that there's much more trust in our system than maybe we've seen in years past." There were 33 reports filed at the Air Force Academy in the last year, up from 20 in the 2009-2010 school year.

The number of incidents has remained steady in the last two years at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, with 10 each year, but the report found that the school isn't in compliance with the Defense Department policy that stipulates training on prevention and response be provided to cadets every year. Greg Jacob, policy director for the Service Women's Action Network, said this proves that the academies aren't doing enough to stop sexual abuse. "Ending the widespread issue of sexual harassment and sexual assault in the military starts by ending it at the service academies," she said.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said in a statement:

"This is a leadership issue, first and foremost, so I also expect us to lead with integrity and with energy to eliminate sexual assault and harassment from our culture ... I'm confident the steps we are taking are the right ones, but we must continue to improve."

In addition to just talking about the problem, the Department took steps today to aid those who report sexual abuse. Service members who file a report saying they've been the victim of sexual assault can now request an expedited transfer from their unit, and they must get a response within 72 hours. Plus, records on sexual assault for all members of the military will be kept for 50 years in unrestricted cases and five years in restricted cases to provide victims with longer access to the files.

Giants coach downplays injury, ready for Dallas

By TOM CANAVAN

updated 3:34 p.m. ET Dec. 26, 2011

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? Walking into his news conference to kick off an NFC East showdown week with the Dallas Cowboys, Tom Coughlin couldn't hide the injury.

There was a noticeable limp in his left leg, one seemingly that will bother the 65-year-old New York Giants coach for weeks and might require medical intervention down the road.

Coughlin didn't care. He wasn't going to discuss the extent of the injury sustained in Saturday's game with the Jets when he was slammed into by Giants running back D.J Ware after the running back was hit out of bounds.

All that was important was that the Giants (8-7) are playing Dallas (8-7) Sunday night at MetLife Stadium for the NFC East title and a playoff berth. The loser goes home.

MIAMI (AP) ? The pilot killed in a helicopter crash while flying to pick up a heart for transplant routinely flew medical transport flights and had flown combat missions in Vietnam, the man's son said Tuesday.

A heart surgeon and a technician from the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville also died in the crash early Monday in a remote, densely wooded part of north Florida.

E. Hoke Smith, 68, founded SK Jets in St. Augustine in 1997 for medical transport flights, his son, Derrick Smith, told The Associated Press. The younger Smith is the company's general manager.

Smith started flying when he was 16, and he flew combat missions in Vietnam, his son said. The company's website lists the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross among his commendations.

Smith routinely flew medical transport flights, particularly during the holidays when he gave his employees time off, his son said.

"He did them quite often. He loved to fly," Derrick Smith said. "He didn't want them to have to take time away from their families."

Derrick Smith referred questions about the crash to the National Transportation Safety Board. An NTSB spokesman said investigators were on the scene in Clay County.

No flight plan had been filed for the helicopter, which was headed to Shands at the University of Florida, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen.

The helicopter also was carrying heart surgeon Dr. Luis Bonilla and procurement technician David Hines of the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.

Mayo Clinic spokesman Layne Smith said the patient who had been scheduled to receive the heart is back on the waiting list for a new organ.

Kathy Giery, a spokeswoman for Shands' LifeQuest Organ Recovery Service, said the heart was not recovered from the donor. It was too far along in the process of lining up organ recipients and surgical teams to get the heart to another patient, Giery said.

Giery could not say whether any other organs were recovered and donated because of privacy laws, but she said the heart not being used did not affect the other recovery personnel already in place.

The heart would have been the first organ recovered, Giery said.

Bergen said the Bell 206 helicopter went down about 12 miles northeast of Palatka, which is about 40 miles east of Gainesville.

The crash site was about a mile off a dirt road in a densely wooded area, and the crash ignited a fire that burned about 10 acres of woods, said Clay County Sheriff's Office Lt. Russ Burke.

The wreckage was discovered around noon Monday, and the aircraft was not in one piece, he said.

"It was well hidden in the woods," Burke said. "If it hadn't set the woods on fire it might have been awhile before anyone spotted it."

All three bodies have been recovered, he said.

"We've been touched by the outpouring of prayer and sympathy from patients, friends and colleagues who understand the demands and sacrifices made by these dedicated transplant teams," said Dr. William Rupp, vice president of Mayo Clinic and CEO of Mayo Clinic in Florida, in a statement Tuesday. "We hope the community honors their sacrifice by supporting organ donation."

The National Weather Service in Jacksonville reported there was light fog with overcast conditions in the area but no rain when the plane went down.

Microsoft Is Way Overdue In Leaving CES Keynote ? More Room For Companies That Ship

Microsoft_KeynoteThe topic around the olives and cheese plate last week at an extended family Christmas gathering was, interestingly enough, Microsoft distancing itself from CES. My family, not ordinarily given to tech gossip, was alarmed, thinking that perhaps there was a grand re-ordering of things that they should know about. It's a remarkably straightforward move, far from the conspiracy theories the last few days have spawned, but when you're dealing with bruisers like Microsoft and CES, everything is swathed in diplomacy as would be ostensibly amicable divorce proceedings. But Microsoft's grievances are legitimate and the move is a smart one. "Our product news milestones generally don't align with the show's January timing." How true that is, and as others have pointed out, their product news generally didn't align with products, either. And they're aware that their news is propagating in a completely different way than it used to.

India, Aus ready for Boxing Day skirmish

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his teammates had a full-blown nets session at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. (AFP Photo)

MELBOURNE: The world celebrated Christmas in style but it was business as usual on Sunday for Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his teammates, who geared up for the Boxing Day Test against Australia with a full-blown nets session at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on a cloudy and windswept morning.

Indian players, who rang in Christmas by watching Don-2 with their families at a private screening on Saturday night, appeared to be on song as they batted, bowled and fielded with vigour to demonstrate that they would be primed for the action when the umpires call 'play' on Monday morning.

With the two rivals having already identified their playing XIs on Saturday, the drop-in pitch and wet weather conditions were the talking points on the eve of the first Test. As morning showers are predicted on Monday, the opening day, opening show could well be scripted by pace bowlers and rain gods. In fact, light showers have been forecast on the first three days of the match, indicating that there could be minor hold-ups in play.

Skipper Dhoni and his Australian counterpart Michael Clarke will thus have one eye on the sky and the other on the 22-yard strip when they go out for the toss. India may look the better-prepared side for this big contest, but no one knows the MCG conditions better than the Australian players, who spent Christmas Day in R&R (Rest and Recreation) mode with their families.

Cricket pitches are known to be notoriously unpredictable, the drop-in variety more so. MCG curator Cameron Hodgkins has warned both teams to expect a livelier-than-usual track this time, particularly in the opening session. This could well prompt Dhoni and Clarke to bowl first if they win the toss.

It will be interesting to see Clarke's decision if he wins the toss, especially after Australia's harrowing experience at the MCG last year against England when they were shot out for 98 in their first innings after Andrew Strauss had sent them in.

If Hodgkins is to be believed, the pitch, where the ball will come on to the bat, is likely to ease out gradually and will be at its best for batting on Day 2 and 3. India, who have never beaten Australia at the MCG in a Boxing Day Test match, must therefore look to make a statement, irrespective of whether they bat or bowl first. Australia and India have been involved in five Boxing Day Tests at the MCG with the hosts winning four and one ending in a draw.

If this represents India's best chance to humble the Aussies in their own backyard, Dhoni's boys must be ready not only to seize the chances that come their way but also create opportunities for themselves.

The good news from the Indian camp is that everyone is fit and available for selection. All their top-order batsmen, including the skipper himself, each had 3-4 extensive sessions in the nets over the last few days. On Sunday, even their bowlers had a knock after having strutted their stuff in the nets.

Missile mystery: Who owns 69 seized Patriots?

China denied on Friday any link to a batch of 69 Patriot missiles confiscated by Finnish authorities, saying the weapons were destined for South Korea.

"As far as we know these goods were made in Germany and were being sent to South Korea,"? Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin told a daily news briefing. "This is a British ship which left Germany carrying Patriot missiles for South Korea."

Some reports have alleged the missiles were destined for China, but Liu said that was not the case.

"I don't see what connection this boat has with China. We think it odd that some people always link certain things to China. The facts are all very clear," he added.

The surface-to-air missiles were found on Wednesday when authorities searched the cargo ship Thor Liberty in Kotka, southern Finland. They also discovered 150 tons of explosive material called nitroguanidine, which was not stowed properly.

Markku Koskinen, the director of traffic operations at the port of Kotka, said they were deficiently packed in wooden boxes on open pallets and would be moved to metal containers in line with rules on the maritime transport of explosives.

Finnish authorities confiscated the missiles found on the ship and arrested its Ukrainian captain and chief officer on suspicion of trying to transport the missiles via Finland without permission.

"The missiles did not have the appropriate transit papers," Detective Superintendent Timo Virtanen said.

Finland requires those seeking to transport defense material via its territory to seek permission. In the past six years there have been 20 cases of defense material being transported without the required documentation with the latest incident appearing to be one of the largest consignments.

A spokesman for Germany's Defense Ministry told The Associated Press on Thursday that the missiles were an official shipment that was fully declared and had all necessary clearings from German authorities. He also said they were being transported to South Korea.

The ship was sailing under an Isle of Man flag and had stopped to load anchor cables on board.

China is subject to an arms embargo by the United States and European Union imposed after the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators around Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989.

Bristol-Myers liver cancer drug fails trial (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Bristol-Myers Squibb Co said on Thursday its liver cancer drug brivanib failed to meet the primary endpoint in a late-stage clinical trial.

Brivanib failed to meet the main goal of improving overall survival versus placebo in liver cancer patients who failed or are intolerant to sorafenib. Sorafenib is used to treat advanced primary liver cancer.

Bristol-Myers said three other trials, to evaluate brivanib in different liver cancer patient groups, will continue as planned.

"We remain committed to the development of brivanib as a potential treatment option for patients with liver cancer, and the ongoing study investigating brivanib 'first-line' is expected to complete in 2012," senior vice president Brian Daniels said in a statement.

Shares of the company closed at $35.09 on Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange.

Russian rig sinks, more than 50 feared dead

A drilling rig with 67 crew on board capsized and sank off Russia's far eastern island of Sakhalin on Sunday while being towed through a storm, leaving more than 50 dead or missing in the icy Sea of Okhotsk.

Emergency officials said the crew of an icebreaker and tugboat rescued 14 workers alive from the jack-up rig, the 'Kolskaya', which was operated by a Russian offshore exploration firm. They recovered four bodies from the water.

Four of the survivors, suffering from hypothermia, were airlifted by helicopter to land and taken to hospital after the disaster struck at 12:45 p.m. (0145 GMT).

The rest of the crew were missing, 200 km (125 miles) off the coast of remote Sakhalin island. The water temperature was one degree Celsius (33.8 Fahrenheit), giving survivors around 30 minutes before death from freezing, according to maritime and rescue websites.

"The Kolskaya keeled to its side ... and sank within 20 minutes. The depth of the water at the site is 1,042 metres (0.65 miles)," Russia's federal water transport agency said in a statement on its website.

Several rescue crafts and helicopters had been sent to the site to scour the waters for survivors from the rig owned by Arktikmorneftegazrazvedka (AMNGR), a unit of state-owned Zarubezhneft.

"There is no ecological danger. The vessel was carrying the minimum amount of fuel as it was being tugged by two craft," said a spokesman for AMNGR.

But the incident will deal a blow to efforts by Russia, the world's largest energy producer, to step up offshore oil and gas exploration to stave off a long-term decline in onshore production.

The jack-up rig, which has three support legs that can be extended to the ocean floor while its hull floats on the surface, was heading from Kamchatka to Sakhalin when it overturned in stormy winter conditions with a swell of up to 6 metres (19.7 feet).

"(President) Dmitry Medvedev has ordered all necessary assistance be provided to the victims of the drilling platform accident and has ordered a probe into the circumstances of the loss of the platform," the Kremlin said. The Emergencies Ministry said it would work through Sunday night.

"The violation of safety rules during the towing of the drilling rig, as well as towing without consideration of the weather conditions ... are believed to be the cause of the (disaster)," investigators said in a statement on their website.

The 'Neftegaz-55' tugboat, also owned by AMNGR, had been towing the Kolskaya and took part in the search effort, but pulled out after suffering hull damage from the high waves.

The tug, carrying most of the crew rescued from the rig, was taking on water and trying to limp to port. An icebreaker, the 'Magadan', was still at the scene.

The rig, built in Finland in 1985, had been doing work on a minor gas production project in the Sea of Okhotsk for a unit of state-controlled gas export monopoly Gazprom, the company said.

Russia's prize offshore gas and oil fields lie to the northeast of Sakhalin. Two major offshore projects are already producing oil and gas off the island - Sakhalin-1, operated by Exxonmobil and Sakhalin-2, in which Gazprom has a controlling stake.

The disaster is unlikely to seriously affect oil or gas production. AMNGR said the vessel was no longer under contract when it sank.

Operating conditions in the region, explored by Soviet geologists in the 1960s and 1970s, are among the harshest for Russian energy companies.

Winter often lasts 220-240 days in the waters off Sakhalin, where the main companies operating are ExxonMobil, Gazprom, and Royal Dutch Shell. They produce oil and gas, sometimes in icebound conditions, for export largely to Asian markets.

Sakhalin-2, in which Shell and Mitsui also have stakes, produces 10 million tons per year of liquefied natural gas at Russia's only LNG plant in the port of Prigorodnoye for export to Asia, much of it to Japan.

Each tanker of crude oil produced by at the 160,000 barrels-per-day Sakhalin-1 project, operated by ExxonMobil, is escorted by two icebreakers when ice thickness reaches 60 cm (2 feet).

State-controlled Rosneft this year reached a major deal with Exxon to explore for oil and gas in the Kara Sea, to the north of the Russian mainland, a largely unexplored region estimated to hold over 100 billion barrels of oil.

A combination of poor infrastructure and chronic corner-cutting has dealt the country its share of sea disasters, notably the 2000 sinking of the nuclear submarine Kursk in the Barents Sea in August 2000, killing all 118 aboard and prompting criticism of the sluggish response.

Revamped double-decker to hit London streets soon (AP)

LONDON ? The latest incarnation of the British capital's iconic double-decker buses will be crisscrossing the city's streets in time for the summer Olympics, London Mayor Boris Johnson promised Friday.

Johnson said the sleek new vehicles would be a fitting successor to London's much-loved red Routemasters, which were nearly all pulled off the streets in 2005. Their bigger, boxier replacements proved more practical in many ways, but haven't inspired the same kind of loyalty.

Johnson promised a redesign when he became mayor, and the he was on board Friday as a prototype pulled into Trafalgar Square.

"It is the latest, greatest masterpiece of British engineering and design," Johnson crowed.

Although some old-style Routemasters still ply the tourist route between St. Paul's Cathedral and the Tower of London, the bus beloved by generations of Londoners was doomed by issues of accessibility and cost.

Passengers loved the buses' curved lines, their conductors and their open platforms at the back ? ideal for a harried commuter racing to make a connection.

But Routemasters weren't wheelchair-accessible and the aging fleet proved expensive to maintain. Even the handy hop-on, hop-off platforms were a problem: Passengers racing to catch their early morning ride or coming home from the pub sometimes fell off the bus, occasionally with fatal consequences.

Johnson's new bus revives the platforms (which can now be closed) and restores some of the original's asymmetry and rounded feel. The mayor's administration claims it will be the most environmentally friendly vehicle of its kind.

The mayor's opponents have raised concerns over the cost of the redesign, attacking it as a vanity project.

Opposition assembly member Val Shawcross said Londoners should be asking themselves "whether spending millions on redesigning buses when we're on the verge of another recession should really be a priority."

Almost half the U.S. using smartphones, with iPhone leading gains (Appolicious)

New research from Nielsen shows that the smartphone is continuing to make big leaps in popularity in the U.S., now accounting for some 44 percent of all cellular phones being used in the country.

Apple?s iPhone leads the pack in the U.S. among smartphone manufacturers, accounting for 28.6 percent of the entire market in the country. It?s not the top platform in the country, though ? that still goes to Google?s Android platform, which holds down 44 percent of the total smartphone market.

MSNBC?s Technolog has the story, which notes Nielsen gathered its data from 25,000 U.S. cellular customers and that the smartphone market in 2009 accounted for just 18 percent of all cellular phones in the U.S. Among manufacturers, Apple is the leader, but the next biggest share of the market goes to BlackBerry maker Research In Motion with 17 percent. Next is Android device maker HTC with 15.8 percent, then the world leader in smartphones by revenue, Samsung, with 10.4 percent. The Windows Mobile platform came in fourth, accounting for 5.3 percent of all smartphones.

Among the 44 percent of people that own smartphones, more than half of them are between the ages of 18 and 34. Sixty-four percent of 25- to 34-year-olds are smartphone owners, while 53 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds own smartphones. On average, iOS users have 44 apps on their devices.

Facebook is the most-used app on both iOS and Android, Nielsen reported (which we already knew), and just under half ? 49 percent ? say they ?frequently? use their smartphones while they?re shopping. In fact, using smartphones to save money is something that a lot of owners do. Nielsen also found that 87 percent of app users ? those who have downloaded an app in the last 30 days ? used them to access a ?deal-of-the-day? website, such as LivingSocial or Groupon.

We?ve heard that Apple?s devices are growing in popularity and that demand in 2012 for the devices may be even higher than was previously expected. Sounds like we might be seeing Apple?s share of the smartphone market increasing as that market continues to grow. Of course, we?ll have to wait and see what Google and Android have to offer, but things seem to be going well for Apple.
