James Franco Crowns Kristen Stewart 'Warrior Queen'

Oscar-nominated actor compares 'Twilight' star to her 'Snow White' character in a Huffington Post article.
By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Kristen Stewart as "Snow White"

If you looked up "jack of all trades" in the dictionary, we're pretty sure you'd find a picture of James Franco. His credits include actor, author, producer, director, artist, student, teacher — we'd go on, but we think you get the picture.

He's recently become a contributor to The Huffington Post, and his latest article is a review of "Snow White and the Huntsman" that successfully compares Kristen Stewart to her edgy character.

"['Snow White'] could also be said to parallel Stewart's rise to stardom," Franco writes. "Some might argue that Stewart — or any young upstart buoyed by the surge of a successful franchise, album, or Internet meme — is just as unjustly charmed. Some could say she had a lucky break when she was cast in 'Twilight' and then rose to international stardom based less on her own skills than on the success of the project. But, whereas 'Snow White' would more than likely be inarticulate, diseased and frail after being confined in a tower for 10 years, Kristen Stewart landed 'Twilight' after years of working with some of the best directors in the business (David Fincher, Sean Penn). She actually does deserve the crown."

Franco's critique recognizes the challenge filmmakers face when turning a fairy tale into a live-action film instead of simply animating it. He notes that Peter Jackson revolutionized the film industry with "Lord of the Rings," greatly enhancing the technology aspect of fantasy stories. But whereas "Puss in Boots" can skim emotional development by falling in love in seconds, Stewart must prove to an audience that her romantic entanglements are real.

Franco then relates Snow White's epic battle against Charlize Theron's Evil Queen as Stewart's fight for recognition among Hollywood's honored elite, believing Stewart deserves more credit than she's given.

"The images of Snow White as a leader of immense strength, charging on horseback across the beach at the head of an army, has less to do with her character and more to do with the actress who plays her," Franco pens. "Stewart has braved more scrutiny of her private life than most presidents. She has taken big career risks by doing films like 'Welcome to the Rileys,' 'The Runaways' and 'On the Road' (nudity, I hear). She has worked her ass off. Whatever Snow White may be, Kristen is a warrior queen. Give her the crown."

This isn't the first time Franco divulged his thoughts on one of Stewart's projects. He frequently mentioned wanting to be involved in "Twilight" on late-night talk shows and even told Jimmy Kimmel he wanted to sing a song with Robert Pattinson or helm a skit with the cast for his Academy Award hosting debut. When MTV News caught up with the actor at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival, he had read the first three books and saw the first three films, prompting us to ask him about his thoughts on the series he deemed "fascinating."

"[Along with the books, the] movies are interesting also because they've really become part of the whole 'Twilight' phenomenon, and it's really hard to extricate those actors from the reading experience or just the phenomenon of 'Twilight' now," he said. "They've become a part of it to the point that the movies are almost commenting on themselves. There will be a scene where the go-to guys, Taylor and Rob, are in the tent, it's almost like a 'Brokeback Mountain' scene, where the two guys are talking in a tent and the girl is asleep, and they're having, like, this romantic moment almost through her, in a way. One of them says, 'Well, I'm hotter than you,' and it's almost like they're winking at the fans, like to the Team Jacob or the Team Edwards."

Check out everything we've got on "Snow White and the Huntsman."

96% First Position

All Critics (46) | Top Critics (21) | Fresh (44) | Rotten (2)

A number of the performances are plain stunning - Aran and Joan, in particular, seem born to move - and in many ways watching the movie is like watching a sporting event; there are winners and losers and favorites to cheer on.

It's an intense journey, and Kargman captures it all, down to the dancers' bloodied and bruised feet.

Yes, it is possible to create a gripping documentary about the ballet world without resorting to "Black Swan" melodramatics.

Because its subjects are so driven and so talented, "First Position," which is about ballet, is more gripping than the norm.

It's in the quick audience-reaction shots of the young dancers' exultant parents and cringing private instructors that the movie finds its most nakedly human moments.

The film shows the grueling work it takes for young dancers like Zamora to look effortless on stage, and First Position shows teachers who range from supportive to borderline abusive.

It's a wealth of material at odds with a scant running time and shallow focus.

When it's over, you won't remember so much about who won and who lost. Instead, what remains is the expression on a young dancer's face, reflected in a mirror: showing the joy of being in love with what you do.

What we experience is the overwhelming thrill of the competition and the true agony of defeat.

It could very well compete for Best Documentary at next year's Academy Awards.

For someone (like me) who has never been to a ballet, the talent of these teens and tweens is a revelation.

It's 'Spartacus' en pointe.

Inspiring documentary about hardworking young dancers.

Almost loses its sense of good taste entirely in the final act, straining to build suspense and shape heroes. The bias hangs a little ugly in an otherwise passable, somewhat enlightening effort.

The cookie cutter format Kargman uses in presenting her subjects may be unoriginal but a safe way to introduce the filmmaker to her new audience.

Child ballet dancer and former journalist Bess Kargman brings a dancer's passion and insight to her directorial debut, illuminating the addictive magic and fierce demands of a ballet dancer's life.

Really, all of the dancers' evident passion for their art is, well, spellbinding.

These kids are proud of their tights.

Kargman follows the pre-established pattern of documentaries following competitions from crosswords to spelling bees, but the format works and she's found six kids ranging in age from 9 to 16 who are truly involving.

MPAA may let Megaupload users retrieve non-copyrighted files, does it for the Armed Forces

MPAA may let Megaupload users retrieve noncopyrighted content, does it for US Military's men and women

Megaupload's still immersed in hot water, but there are signs the legal temperature could be cooling... slightly. Don't breathe a sigh of relief just yet though, as a significant portion of that confiscated cache of cloud-stored files remains somewhat indefinitely under lock and key. A minor reprieve may be on the way, however, owing to a much more "sympathetic" MPAA which has asked the court to consider releasing non-illegally obtained content to previous users. And lest your evil eye be trained too heavily upon the Hollywood group behind the shutdown, the association's made it quite clear that, under the site's TOS, users were never guaranteed continued access to uploaded content anyway.

The change of heart comes in response to a motion filed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, on behalf of a member of the U.S. military, petitioning the return of personal, non-IP infringing files. According to the now-defunct site's founder Kim Dotcom, that group of "legitimate" users comprised nearly 16,000 accounts utilized primarily to share photos and video with far away family and friends. Of course, should this retrieval request be granted, a requisite procedure will need to be put in place to filter out copyrighted media -- a system that's sure to pose countless headaches for those involved. Nothing's yet been decided so, for now, the fate of your lost files rests firmly in the court's hands. Such are the perils of the cloud.

How can you troubleshoot your business networking issues ...

Might be looking to hire an IT support team for my business.

You can start by verifying that the network cable is properly connected to the back of the computer. Also when checking the connection of the network cable, ensure that the LEDs on the network are properly illuminated.
Make sure that the network card is capable of pinging or seeing itself by using the ping command. Windows / MS-DOS users ping the computer from a MS-DOS prompt. Unix / Linux variant users ping the computer from the shell.
Make sure that if this is a new network card being installed into the computer that the card?s resources are properly set and not conflicting with any hardware in the computer.

In some cases it may take a computer some additional time to detect or see the network. If after booting the computer you are unable to see the network, give the computer 2-3 minutes to detect the network. Windows users may also want to try pressing the F5 (refresh) key when in Network Neighborhood to refresh the network connections and possibly detect the network.

Clinton: Romney would be 'calamitous' for US

(AP) ? Former President Bill Clinton warned Monday that a Mitt Romney presidency would be "calamitous" for the nation and the world, going further than even President Barack Obama in depicting the consequences of a return to Republican rule of the White House.

With Obama standing thoughtfully to one side, Clinton slammed Romney by name, an apparent rebuttal to his own comments last week that were widely seen as flattering to Romney's background in business.

Clinton said Obama had earned a second term because of his steering of the economy through a "miserable situation," and that "the alternative would be, in my opinion, calamitous for our country and the world."

Clinton's take came as he helped raise at least $3.6 million for Obama at three New York fundraisers. The two have patched over a personal rift from the 2008 campaign when Obama defeated Hillary Rodham Clinton in a bitter Democratic primary. But Clinton caused some heartburn in Obama's campaign last week by remarking that Romney had a "sterling" business record ? an assertion that undercut Democrats' criticism of Romney's decisions at the private equity firm Bain Capital.

Clinton also said at the fundraiser that Republicans and Romney have adopted Europe's economic policies. "Who would have ever thought that the Republicans who made a living for decades deriding Old Europe would embrace their economic policies," he said.

For his part, Obama said the economy had been difficult for so many voters that some could reach the point that "you're willing to try just about anything, even if you've seen it before."

Clinton's larger point in the interview last week was that Obama is the better choice to steer the economy, and the White House denied that Clinton "made news." The televised remark nonetheless gave Republicans campaign gold just as the government released a disappointing report saying the United States created far fewer new jobs in May than expected ? a big political blow for Obama.

Obama and Clinton also are on opposite sides of a close Democratic congressional primary contest in New Jersey. Clinton also campaigned last week for Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Barrett. Barrett faces Republican Gov. Scott Walker in a special recall election contest on Tuesday but has seen little backing from the Democratic Party or Obama.

Romney's campaign sought to exploit the differences, circulating Clinton's comments from a December 2007 interview on PBS in which he suggested that electing Obama would carry some risks. "When is the last time we elected a president based on one year of service in the Senate before he started running?" Clinton said.

Still, Clinton's ability to deliver campaign dollars and his record as a sound campaign strategist make him an asset to the Obama campaign that apparently outweighs any drawbacks. For Clinton, Obama is not only the head of their shared party, he may be the best entree for a second Clinton administration if Hillary Clinton were to run for president in 2016.

The two appeared together at a fundraiser in April and plan several more joint events across the country. Clinton has also recorded a video for Obama and sent campaign emails to supporters.

Obama campaign bundler and billionaire investor Marc Lasry held an exclusive reception Monday night, followed by a gala at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel, where rocker Jon Bon Jovi closed a dinner concert with the upbeat Beatles anthem "Here Comes the Sun."

Taking the stage a short while later, Clinton harkened back to the better economic days of his presidency.

"Remember me? I'm the guy who gave you four surplus budgets out of the eight I sent" to Congress, he said to applause.

Clinton and Obama were focusing their message Monday on economic opportunity. Polls show that economic trends are likely to determine the election, a development that could help Romney if the economy sags significantly. Obama and Romney were tied at 46 percent in Gallup polling last week of national election preferences.

"They've got a nominee who is expressing support for an agenda that would reverse the progress we made and take us back to the exact same policies that got us into this process in the first place," Obama said, although he complimented Romney by name for his success in business.

The evening concluded with an event dubbed "Barack on Broadway" at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Obama will return to Manhattan next week for a fundraiser at the home of "Sex and the City" actress Sarah Jessica Parker.

While Obama was in New York, Romney was on the West Coast to attend fundraisers in Portland, Ore., and Seattle.

Obama's campaign released a video of campaign manager Jim Messina urging supporters to "stay focused, work hard and ignore the ups and downs." The campaign included a map listing eight undecided states: Colorado, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Florida.

Lasry, head of the hedge fund Avenue Capital, told CNBC last week that private capital investment as practiced by Bain Capital can do worthwhile things. He shrugged off as "politics" Obama's recent references to investment choices he claims have ravaged jobs for the sake of investors' profits.

About 50 people attended the $40,000-per-ticket reception at Lasry's home, an art-filled townhouse on Manhattan's tony Upper East Side. Tickets to the 500-person gala at the Waldorf began at $2,500. Those who contributed $35,800 or raised $100,000 gained access to a smaller reception with Obama.

The concert at the New Amsterdam Theatre drew 1,700 people. Tickets for that event started at $250, the Obama campaign said.

PFT: Tebow joining Sanchez in 'Jets West' camp

espn_g_pamphilon_sy_600Getty Images

For a guy who has said he?s not looking for attention, he sure is looking for a lot of attention.

On Monday, three days after dropping a 10,000-word manifesto on his website regarding, in laborious detail, the thoughts and words and actions that culminated in the release of the Gregg Williams audio (and, of course, its aftermath), filmmaker Sean Pamphilon has taken to the airwaves to talk even more about the situation.

Look at his Twitter timeline.? He is aggressively seeking media appearances.? In a Friday tweet, he expressed a desire to be on PFT Live, pointing out that I?ve ?been wanting to have [him] on.?

The more accurate conjugation of the verb ?to want? is the past tense.? When the Williams audio surfaced, I had many questions that the PFT Live audience (all five of them) surely would have wanted to hear Pamphilon answer.? Given his soul purging in 10,000 words or more, there?s nothing to really ask, other than, perhaps, one of Rain Man?s favorite questions.

Pamphilon continues to throw logs onto the 15-minute-of-fame fire.? He recently posted the audio of a voice message from Saints quarterback Drew Brees, in which Brees asks for an opportunity to review the initial essay that Pamphilon posted online, at the time the Williams audio was released.

Pamphilon?s latest effort to jump into the spotlight may simply be a transparent effort to build buzz for his documentary, The United States of Football.? Alternatively (or perhaps in addition), his goal could be to erase the perception that the betrayed former Saints special-teamer Steve Gleason by releasing audio that Pamphilon was able to capture only because he had the trust of Gleason, who in turn had the trust of the Saints.

In his diary, Pamphilon spends much time explaining that, as of early April, he had no plan to release the audio, and that he proceeded only after being prodded to do so by the NFLPA, via former Saints linebacker and NFLPA executive committee member Scott Fujita.? Then, when Brees and Gleason wanted to review Pamphilon?s corresponding essay and Pamphilon declined and Gleason told Pamphilon not to release the audio, Pamphilon decided the die had been cast and the audio was released.

Perhaps that?s why Pamphilon was almost defiant on Monday, while appearing on 690 AM in New Orleans.? ?How has this negatively impacted Steve Gleason?? Pamphilon said, via the New Orleans Times-Picayune.? ?This has been devastating for me and my family.? Anybody who can tell me what is negative for Steve other than I hurt his feelings, I?d love to hear that.?

Um, there?s a slight difference between a betrayal of trust and hurt feelings.? Especially when the betrayal of trust triggers feelings in Gleason that he in turn betrayed the trust of the Saints, by trusting a man who wasn?t trustworthy.

Previously, Pamphilon created the impression that he was willing to sacrifice his relationship with Gleason to advance some greater good.? ?I gave up a sure thing, to do what myself and many other parents would consider the right thing,? Pamphilon told Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports in response to the initial criticism Pamphilon endured.

But by trying so hard to justify what he did, Pamphilon has admitted that he was ready to not publish the audio (i.e., to not do the ?right thing?), and that it was only after the NFLPA prodded him, apparently for strategic reasons, to release the tape on April 2 that he decided to proceed.? Thus, while Pamphilon?s explanation that Gleason was fine with the audio being published as long as he had a chance to read Pamphilon?s essay in advance would tend to take much of the sting out of the notion that Gleason was vehemently opposed to Gregg Williams? words being played for a broader audience, Pamphilon?s also has undermined his own supposedly righteous motives.

He didn?t surrender to a crisis of conscience.? He had decided not to release the audio, until the NFLPA, via Fujita, dusted off the topic a month after the bounty scandal was exposed.

Auditor Slams ECB Risk-Management Practices - Business Insider

The European Central Bank lacks an independent risk management authority and suffers from a disconnect between management and risk management authorities, at least as of 2010, according to an independent audit report released today.?

"No independent, single, body, such as a Chief Risk Officer or overall risk management committee, has been set up between the EB and the two risk function/units," the report found.

"At the time of the audit the EB member charged with risk management also had a number of other areas of?responsibility, whereas a CRO would solely concentrate on risk management."?

The finding was rejected by the ECB.

"The current organizational structure for risk management at the ECB provides for an efficient framework for the allocation of tasks under the Executive Board?s collegiate?responsibility for the Bank?s overall risk management."

But the finding is eerily parallel to the exact same conclusion stated in today's report from MF Global's trustee, which said MF Global's ever-increasing trade amounts had left risk management teams in the dust.

"The Risk Department struggled to keep up with MF Global?s strategic changes," the trustee report states. By the spring of 2010, the changes in MF Global?s business had progressed ahead of the risk?policies and practices in place, and gaps became apparent and were identified to the Board."

The FT's Ralph Atkins found the conclusions "eye-catching" given the massive expansion of the ECB's balance sheet.

LeFigaro's Cyrille Lach?vre, meanwhile, raised the prospect of a?J?r?me Kerviel-like rogue employee's error going unnoticed as a result of the risk management gaps and causing a massive meltdown.?

Kerviel was the Societe Generale employee who's billion-dollar trades went unnoticed by his superiors until mammoth losses were reported. ?

"It's troubling to read that '40 percent of ECB personnel said in 2009 that they had not received sufficient information concerning operational risk management' " he said.?

Replacing Windows For Home Improvement | Localareaflorist.com ...

Posted by admin . Published on 02 June 2012, No Comments Received

Windows serve as the eyes of a home.? If those eyes start to get cloudy, as sometimes happens when homes age, they can detract from the attractiveness of the home.? One way to stop this from happening is usually to install replacement windows.? These windows can boost the energy efficiency of the home as well as its looks.

Before 1970, many homes were built using single glazed windows.? While this kind of window gave plenty of ventilation and light for a home, they weren?t designed to provide the energy efficiency required for homes built with central heating and air conditioning.? The older windows let the home to be heated or cooled depending on the weather outside.? If they do not seal correctly, they can allow drafts the chill the occupants to the bone during the winter. Replacing windows in the home is a task that should be given to window contractors.? The window contractor has experience at making the necessary precise measurements, buying windows required for replacement and meeting the installation needs the homeowner may express.

Among the best approaches to install replacement windows is to select those designed to use the existing casements.? While the result is a rather smaller window, there?s no need to take out siding from the home or repair wallboard due to the replacement of the windows.?? Replacement is easier and less expensive. Many older windows made of wood can cause problems due to variations in humidity.? On humid days, the wood swells and makes it difficult to close or open the window.? When the air becomes dryer, the windows rattle in the wind and leak air around the windows.? Use of vinyl inserts is a great way to replace the windows while retaining the beauty of the home precisely as it was built. Replacing these wooden frames with vinyl ones can stop the task that seems to never end of glazing and painting wooden windows.? The vinyl never has to be painted to retain its great looks.

Even homes that had several of the earliest types of double glazed windows can usually benefit from window replacement.? Many of these kinds of early windows were manufactured with inferior technology and lost the seal, allowing moisture and air to leak inside the glass.? These windows may fog up in the glass preventing occupants from seeing outside.? Additionally, they?re less effective at providing the needed insulation for the home.? A window contractor can offer the homeowner answers to restore both the insulation value and also the view of these older double glazed windows.

When needing replacement windows, a window contractor, or general contractor, website here, can offer the needed help for the homeowner to boost the comfort of the home.? The contractor can also work together with the homeowner throughout the whole process, beginning with planning and measurement and ending with installing new windows.

Cabrera's 2 HRs lift Tigers past Yankees

By NOAH TRISTER

DETROIT (AP) - With injuries mounting and losses piling up, the Detroit Tigers needed a power show from Miguel Cabrera.

And when even that wasn't enough, their third-string catcher shrugged off a horrible night on defense and won the game with a fly ball of his own.

Cabrera hit two prodigious home runs to center field - one into the ivy at Comerica Park and the other onto a camera platform - and Omir Santos' sacrifice fly in the ninth inning gave the Tigers a wild 4-3 victory over the New York Yankees on Saturday night.

Cabrera's homers were estimated at 436 and 433 feet - and that seemed conservative. He also doubled to the wall in center in the sixth.

"That was a lot of footage, to say the least," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "But that's just what that guy's capable of doing."

Cabrera had left the clubhouse by the time reporters finished talking to Leyland.

The Tigers (25-28) have been a disappointment this season, but they pulled within five games of the first-place Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.

Detroit overcame a blown save by Jose Valverde (3-1) and an awful night behind the plate by Santos, who was playing because of injuries to the Tigers' top two catchers. Santos made two errors and allowed five stolen bases - but his fly to right off Boone Logan with the bases loaded in the ninth was deep enough to score Brennan Boesch.

Valverde hit two batters and walked two in the ninth, allowing New York to tie it after Cabrera's homer in the eighth gave Detroit a 3-2 lead.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi and hitting coach Kevin Long were ejected in the seventh.

Cabrera's homers cleared two levels of bushes beyond the center-field wall - something rarely seen at Comerica, except maybe during batting practice. The estimated distances only measured how far the hits went before disappearing into the ivy and camera structure, not where they would have landed.

In 2004, Eric Munson homered to nearly the same spot as Cabrera's second homer, and it was estimated at 457 feet, but the process for measuring homers at Comerica has changed.

It's 420 to the wall in straightaway center.

"I've played a lot of games here, and I don't even believe it is 420 out there - it is 420 at other places, and it never seems as big as it does here," said New York center fielder Curtis Granderson, a former Tiger. "I know I've never seen anyone put two balls where he put those two balls tonight. I've seen one or two near the camera well, but that wasn't in a game, and I've never seen anything land where the first one went."

Valverde walked Mark Teixeira on a 3-2 pitch to tie it in the ninth. Santos later kept the rally alive by missing a popup in foul territory for an error, but Raul Ibanez grounded out, leaving the game tied at 3.

Boesch hit a one-out single in the ninth off David Phelps (1-2) and went to third on a single by Jhonny Peralta. Logan came in, and Ramon Santiago pinch-hit for left fielder Don Kelly. The Yankees ended up intentionally walking Santiago to load the bases for Santos.

Santiago was Detroit's only healthy position player on the bench because of injuries to catchers Alex Avila and Gerald Laird and outfielder Andy Dirks. If the game had gone to extra innings, Leyland said the Tigers would have put second baseman Danny Worth in the outfield for the first time in his career.

But Santos made all that moot with his winning fly.

"I was trying to forget all of that stuff that happened in the game," Santos said. "I got a feeling that if I got an at-bat, I was going to be the hero."

Kelly, playing left field with Dirks out, reached above the wall to rob Teixeira of what was nearly an opposite-field home run in the fourth. In the bottom of the inning, Cabrera homered to open the scoring, the ball hitting the ivy a bit to the right of where his second home run ended up.

In the fifth, Kelly singled and scored on Quintin Berry's single to make it 2-0.

Ibanez had a run-scoring groundout in the sixth for New York.

Rick Porcello allowed a run and six hits in six innings for the Tigers, and Detroit held on through an eventful seventh.

With runners on second and third and one out, Granderson hit a foul pop toward the New York dugout that went out of play. Plate umpire Bob Davidson then signaled an ejection, and Girardi came onto the field to argue. In an animated argument near home plate, Girardi threw his hat to the ground, and by the time it was over, he and Long had both been tossed.

The dispute began with a previous pitch.

"You saw the pitch, and you can assume we didn't like the call. This is an emotional game, and things got said," Girardi said. "There was the foul pop that got out of play near our dugout, and Davidson turned toward our dugout and looked like at K-Long instead of going back to the plate. He said not to say anything else, Kevin did, and he got thrown out. That's what made me so hot.

"Umpires don't have wins and losses. All that matters to us is that they do their jobs. A big part of that job is keeping the peace, and I don't think he did that."

Granderson struck out, and Alex Rodriguez reached for an outside pitch and hit a popup to end the inning. In the middle of Rodriguez's at-bat, the New York star called time just as Joaquin Benoit was starting his motion. The Detroit reliever tossed the ball against the screen, and Leyland said afterward Benoit started experiencing some tightness in his arm.

New York starter Hiroki Kuroda allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings. It was his first no-decision in 11 starts this year.

NOTES: Cabrera has 11 homers. ... There was a 39-minute rain delay in the bottom of the first. ... Detroit's Prince Fielder extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a fourth-inning double. ... Girardi said "everything went well" with RHP David Robertson's throwing session. Robertson has a strained oblique. Girardi also said RHP Joba Chamberlain threw a "half-mound" - he dislocated his ankle in March. ... New York RHP David Aardsma, who had elbow ligament replacement surgery last July, threw 20 pitches during his first batting practice session at the Yankees' complex in Tampa, Fla. ... Detroit ace Justin Verlander (5-3) takes the mound Saturday against Phil Hughes (4-5).

Record NM blaze will test forest management

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? A wall of smoke advances across a vast swath of rugged country in southwestern New Mexico where the nation's wilderness movement was born nearly a century ago.

From the air, the smoke stretches as far as the eye can see. On the ground, firefighters talk about the steep canyons that keep them from directly attacking what has become the largest wildfire in New Mexico's recorded history and the largest currently burning in the country.

Sure, things might look bad. But to land managers and scientists, the record-setting blaze represents a true test of decades of work aimed at returning fire to its natural role on the landscape ? a test that comes as many Western states grapple with overgrown forests, worsening drought and a growing prospect for more megafires.

The Whitewater-Baldy fire has destroyed a dozen cabins while marching across more than 354 square miles of the Gila National Forest. A pair of lightning-sparked fires grew together to form the massive blaze.

Unlike last year's megafires in New Mexico and Arizona, this blaze is burning in territory that has been frequently blackened under the watchful eye of the Gila's fire managers.

Starting in the early 1970s, the Gila has been leading the way when it comes to implementing such an active fire management strategy. Instead of immediately dousing flames in the wilderness, forest managers have let them burn as long as conditions are favorable.

The question that the Whitewater-Baldy fire is expected to answer is whether that strategy will pay off with more natural, less intense fires.

"There's a great opportunity here to study a fire like this," said Matthew Rollins, the wildland fire science coordinator with the U.S. Geological Survey's National Center in Virginia.

"The opportunity exists to look at how this fire has behaved differently in terms of vegetation mortality, effects on wildlife and fish habitat and water quality," Rollins said. "We can study how it burned in the wilderness relative to areas with other types of fire management strategies and other types of ignition patterns."

So far, the word from the fire lines is that the majority of the 227,000-acre blaze has burned with low to moderate intensity, not the kind of near-nuclear strength that was exhibited last year with the Las Conchas blaze in northern New Mexico. In that case, entire mountainsides were vaporized, leaving nothing behind but the white ashy skeletons of what used to be trees.

And as for those unburned pockets within the fire's boundaries, Rollins said he believes many of those spots have experienced low-intensity fire numerous times over the last century to make them more resilient.

Previously burned areas have also helped slow the flames on the fire's eastern flank.

"The fact that this is wilderness and the wilderness of the Gila has seen a lot of fires, we are comfortable with allowing it to burn. What we do is monitor it and help steer it around to keep some of the impacts lower than they would otherwise be on their own," said Danny Montoya, an operations section chief with the Southwest Incident Management Team.

Montoya said the rugged terrain has forced firefighters to attack the flames indirectly by starving the fire of fuels along its perimeter.

The smoke also has prevented direct attack from the air. Several helicopters and small planes are helping ground crews with backburn operations.

While a burn severity map has yet to be released, members of the incident management team are estimating that only 20 percent of the fire has burned at high intensity.

Last week, the fire made a 60,000-acre run in one day, scorching mixed conifer at high elevations as the flames were pushed by gusts of up to 60 mph.

That kind of fire can be devastating, experts said.

With fire behavior ranging from active to extreme, it will be some time before the scientists can get on the ground to see how the Gila has fared. Until then, they are working on gathering the decades of research done on the Gila, which is home to the world's first designated wilderness. It was the father of the wilderness movement, forester and conservationist Aldo Leopold, who pushed for the formation of the Gila Wilderness in 1924.

Tree ring data that dates back to the 1500s tells of the forest's fire history and the age of its trees. The perimeters of the Gila's fires along with information about their severity and vegetation mortality for the last century have also been compiled by the U.S. Forest Service.

There's also more ecological data from the federal Joint Fire Science program that can be used for comparisons.

"I think it's going to be a success story for the use of fire for managing forests," Rollins said. "It might not look like it on TV right now, but we haven't had any fatalities or dramatic housing loss like we see in Southern California or it burning so dramatically close to communities like last year's Las Conchas fire."

Experts agree that the Gila will see changes regardless of the severity of the fire. In the worst spots, aspens and other shrubs are expected to take over.

"When we're punching multi-thousand-acre holes in areas of ponderosa pine and drier mixed conifer types with no seed sources surviving, it's very difficult for those conifers to be re-established," said Craig Allen, a USGS ecologist based at Bandelier National Monument in northern New Mexico.

Fire managers are also expecting flooding. As the Las Conchas fire showed, steep denuded areas resulted in walls of water washing down canyons during the rainy season.

Residents in Glenwood are already worried about the prospect of flooding, and federal wildlife managers are concerned about what sediment and ash in the waterways could mean for the native Gila trout.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is also monitoring two packs of endangered Mexican gray wolves that are situated to the north and east of the fire. Last year, wolves in Arizona were able to escape the massive Wallow fire with their pups, but it's unclear how mobile the packs in New Mexico are since their pups are much younger.

The fire is about 15 percent contained, which much of that being on the fire's northern and northwestern flanks.

On Saturday, the more than 1,200 firefighters who are battling the fire continued to build lines to corral the flames before more threatening winds and dry conditions developed.

"We're going to continue fighting this fire aggressively without putting our firefighters in danger," fire information officer Lee Bentley said. "We're getting as much of a black line as we can around this fire."
