FCC finds broadband access lacking | Xinnovation

As the popularity of the telephone grew, and it found new uses in both the personal and business world, phone companies were forced to roll out service to less profitable and populated areas. Access to telephone communications became a right and if it had not, there?s every chance there would still be small towns all over America today with no access to phone lines. In today?s world, internet access is beginning to follow the same pattern. Most major and minor businesses use some form of internet communications whether for customer communications, banking, or any kind of shipping. Job applications are submitted and interviews set up over e-mail, and separated families can enjoy a much closer relationship than ever before.

In short, internet is fast becoming America?s preferred form of communications, but as found by the August 21st report from the Federal Communications Commision (FCC) there are still some 19 million Americans without reliable broadband internet service, 14.5 million of them in rural underserved areas. Similarly, even in areas where broadband is available, the cost of the services is costing millions of Americans access to what is quickly becoming a modern world necessity.

Everything from children?s schoolwork to business reports operate on an internet connection, and while it?s nice for kids to have access to academic sources during school hours, it?s damaging for those who have no access after school. One of the FCC?s coals in more recent years has been a push to give broadband options to everyone in the country, but that is proving difficult for a variety of reasons, most importantly the cost to run lines to those locations and the unwillingness of broadband providers to lose out on recouping expenses by servicing areas with too few people or not high enough average income.

Amidst arguments, attempted legislation and hearings, however, it is incredible to realize that in the few short years that broadband internet has been around, it?s gone from a luxury to a basic human right. As technology develops to harness the incredible potential of a completely interconnected America, we can be assured that there is a bright future ahead for the world of interactive communications.
