Tetris takes over MIT building in case of hack as high art (video)

Image

College pranks usually involve livestock, panties, the use of permanent marker on an unconscious, not-so-innocent partygoer or a combination thereof. But when you gather the cream of the geek crop at a hallowed higher learning institution like MIT, those playful tricks turn into wide-scale works of technical wonderment. Unbeknownst to members of the Earth and Planetary Science departments that inhabit the site of this larger-than-life hack, their building -- long a target for the university's mischievous overachievers -- had its grid-like layout of windows converted into a fully workable version of Tetris, complete with colored "pieces" and increasing levels of difficulty. So, is this merely a case of public performance art or just high-minded shenaningans from some very capable, idle hands? Check out the video below to view this Cambridge, MA-based tomfoolery and decide for yourself.

Workout Spots Wants To Be The OpenTable For Fitness

workout spotsWorkout Spots is hoping to bring the oh-so-popular "OpenTable for X" approach to the world of fitness. The goal, as the name implies, is to help people find nearby gyms, and to register for classes at those gyms. The interface is pretty straightforward ? you just enter your zip code, how far you're willing to travel, whether you're looking for a "spot" or a class, and in the latter case, the class type, and then you get a list of results. Each gym has a profile with basic information and a calendar of classes. If you find a class that you like, you can register directly from the Workout Spots site.

Common environmental contaminant, cadmium, linked to rapid breast cancer cell growth

ScienceDaily (Apr. 23, 2012) ? Studies by researchers at Dominican University of California show that breast cancer cells become increasingly aggressive the longer they are exposed to small concentrations of cadmium, a heavy metal commonly found in cosmetics, food, water and air particles.

The study by Maggie Louie, associate professor of biochemistry, shows exposure to cadmium for prolonged periods of time can cause the progression of breast cancer to become more aggressive. Her findings were presented April 23, at the annual meeting of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, held in conjunction with the Experimental Biology 2012 conference in San Diego.

Breast cancer results from the abnormal growth of the cells in the mammary gland. The normal growth of mammary gland epithelial cells is modulated by the circulating levels of estrogen, a hormone produced by the ovaries. The activity of estrogen is stimulated by the estrogen receptor (ER). Heavy metals such as cadmium can act as endocrine disruptors and mimic estrogen, thereby disrupting the hormone dependent pathways.

While other studies have shown links between acute cadmium exposure and activation of the ER, Louie's study is one of few to focus on chronic cadmium exposure. "The relationship between cancer and chronic exposures at low levels is important to understand because most people are not exposed to high levels of heavy metals, unless they work in manufacturing plants that deal with such metals," Louie said.

She continued: "Unfortunately, cadmium is all around us -- it is in our food, our water, our makeup and our air. Understanding the role that cadmium plays in the progression of breast cancer is extremely important in order to find better ways to prevent the disease from advancing. Ninety percent of cancer deaths are associated with the cancer spreading to other parts of the body. If we can prevent the tumor from spreading, we have a better chance of treating cancer."

Taken together, the findings of Louie's new study and a handful of others published in recent years show that cadmium plays a significant role in the development of breast cancer. However, Louie's research is unique in that it focuses on prolonged exposure rather than acute exposure at the cellular level. The study indicates that chronic exposure to cadmium can contribute to the development of more malignant characteristics in breast cancer cells.

"Many of us are exposed to very low levels of cadmium from the environment on a daily basis, and our research shows that even small concentrations of this metal at prolonged exposures can cause breast cancer cell growth."

Cadmium is produced mainly as a byproduct from mining, smelting and refining sulfidic ores of zinc, lead and copper. Rocks mined to produce phosphate fertilizers also contain varying amounts of cadmium. Cadmium also is found in rechargeable batteries and cigarette smoke. Cadmium enters the body through consumption of contaminated food, water or inhalation of cigarette smoke.

Louie's preliminary data show an increase in the ability of breast cancer cells to migrate and invade through the extracellular matrix with prolonged cadmium exposure. The extracellular matrix is the outer barrier of an organ or tissue. Increased invasive and migration abilities are characteristic of cancer cells' ability to spread. Louie discovered that MCF-7 cells chronically exposed to cadmium express higher levels of SDF-1, a protein associated with tumor invasion and metastasis.

How specific proteins, including SDF-1, contribute to the aggressive characteristics of the cadmium exposed cells requires further research, and understanding their role in cadmium-induced carcinogenesis will provide further insights to how heavy metals contribute to breast cancer progression.

Louie's research is funded by the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health.

Sales on the Internet are going though the roof, what you need to ...

Shopping for goods online is a growing business with sales going though the roof to the point retailers can?t compete with the online stores. At the beginning, people were skeptical when the Internet started but now everybody can and are buying online in greater numbers and if your retail business isn?t selling online then you are going to find it harder and harder to make a profit.

A lot of reputable retail stores have extended their business models to include selling online, setting up online stores in the hopes of obtaining more people buying their items from outside their local area and country. To add icing to the cake, stores with the saving they produce by selling online often give away huge discounts to loyal customers as the cost to sell online is way less then operating a retail business from shop premises. Not to suggest online business don?t have cost, operating a website takes effort and if you have to engage a expert each time you want to make a change or have a software issues then these cost can add up.

With retail premises people walk pass your shop front, so in a lot of case just having a sign up in the window to inform people regarding your specials works, however how can you do that with the web?????? There are many ways, you could pay for ad words and market your keywords, this can burn though cash rather quickly and it could add up to the cost of rent for a retail store.

There is SEO which can take up to 6 months to start to rank on search engines where people can find you and will notice you and the time you will spend to get there will be huge, back links, articles, content, blogs and the list goes on and on.

There are internet business that will for a monthly fee give you a platform to run your business from and to sell online your products but not many that also markets your keywords to get you selling online quicker in the package.

There are web business that can for a regular charge supply you a platform to sell online your items, but not many that also markets your keywords to get you selling online quicker.

Nokia releases Browser 2.0 update for Series 40 handsets with improved speed, multitasking in tow

Nokia releases Browser 2.0 update for Series 40 handsets with improved speed, multitasking in tow

Nokia announced earlier today the release of Browser 2.0 for its Series 40 devices, which of course includes the colorful Asha lineup. The update promises an overall speedier and easier browsing experience, this in large part due to the application condensing data by up to 90 percent. In addition to these enhancements, there's also a novel Download Manager in the refresh, giving users the ability to choose where they'd like to save content without leaving the app. Also included in the update is a new multitasking-while-browsing feature (finally!), as well as a social-sharing bit that lets you push out page URLs to sites like Twitter, Facebook, Sina Weibo and RenRen. Browser 2.0 will be native on future Series 40s, but for now those whom already own a small chunk of the 1.5 billion can grab the goods from the Nokia Store or wait for the OTA package to hit your device.
