ConnecTV social companion beta launches for iPad, PC and Mac (hands-on)

ConnecTV
The old guard's attempt at a social TV companion just got real with the launch of ConnecTV in open beta for iPad, PC and Mac -- smartphones and Android tablet versions are coming soon. The idea is you'll load up this app while watching TV and find a whole new way to discover details of your favorite content while at the same time share with your friends. The app uses a mic to detect what you're watching just like IntoNow and links up with both Facebook or Twitter (it'll also work on its own). Overall we were underwhelmed and quickly realizing that the other startups are way ahead in both release date and functionality. For starters, there are plenty of channels missing and not a single channel number. You can't even search for your favorite shows or channels. But even when it did manage to figure out what we were watching, we felt like we were being forced fed useless data like trivia and ads rather than having useful information like actors or players names at our finger tips. There's no doubt in our mind that the app was designed more to make us discover certain content rather than discover shows based on our actual tastes. Then again, this is the first version out of the gate, but somehow we think ConnecTV's business model will get in the way of ever making anything truly useful.

John Hawkes a "no" for "Walking Dead": publicist (omg!)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - No, John Hawkes will not be playing The Governor on "The Walking Dead."

That's the word from the Oscar-nominated actor's publicist after another actor seeking the role told Movieweb.com that producers wanted the "Martha Marcy May Marlene" star to play the zombie drama's main villain.

"John is NOT appearing on 'The Walking Dead,'" publicist Karen Samfilippo said in an email to TheWrap.

Tom Savini, who has appeared in "Machete" and "Zack and Miri Make a Porno," told Movieweb that he has been lobbying "Walking Dead" producer Greg Nicotero for the role of The Governor for more than a year. But he said producers wanted Hawkes.

"Last time I talked to him about it, when I was in Los Angeles, he said they were going after a name for that part. I said, 'Who?' He said 'John Hawkes'," said Savini.

A representative for "Walking Dead" executive producer Robert Kirkman (who wrote the comics that inspired the series) did not immediately respond to TheWrap's requests for comment.

The word from Hawkes' publicist is sure to fire the hopes of Savini, who directed a 1990 remake of "Night of the Living Dead."

"Every time I see the graphic novel, and I see a picture of The Governor, who looks just like me, I send Greg a picture," he said.

Season two of "The Walking Dead" resumes on AMC on February 12. Six new episodes remain before the show's March 18 season finale.

Think Before You Send, Pre-Resume Job ... - Job Search Techniques

February 1st, 2012 by admin Leave a reply ?

So you?re thinking about or are ready to start your job search and you ask yourself what is the first step? Often times, the first thing people think they need to do is update their resume ( or Linkedin Profile) and send it out to their industry contacts or start mass applying to jobs they find on Monster, CareerBuilder or other job boards; this is NOT the best way to do it. Why? Because you are mass applying to many jobs that may not be a fit and wasting valuable time.

Before you start sending out your resume you need to figure out what employers want and one of the best ways to get into their mind is by doing an analysis of job descriptions posted on indeed.com or company websites. This tip has several steps:

1. Find your job title
a. Write out what you think are the skills or tools you use most in your field or job. I would try to narrow it down to your top two skills and tools used. After you compile your short list go to indeed.com and type in those skills or tool names. The results should give you a sense of the title most often used; write down the top three titles.
b. If you are sure about your job title I would still go to indeed.com but instead of searching for the skills type the short version of your title. For instance, if you are an ?Oracle Database Administrator? I would type ?Database Administrator? and look for variations of that title.

2. Search job postings for opportunities
a. Once you have the most used job titles then do a search for opportunities. You should find a ton of jobs listed. Do a quick read of the job descriptions and select the top five that match your skills, abilities and experience level.

3. Conduct a job analysis
a. Copy and paste the text from your top five job descriptions into Microsoft Word. Read each job description carefully and highlight job relevant skills and tools most often mentioned.
b. After you have done a manual analysis go to wordle.net/create and paste the text from your top five job descriptions and click go. This will create a beautiful word cloud that can be help you zone in on words you selected with your manual analysis or help you see words you overlooked. I recommend limiting the number of words to 25; to do this just click on ?layout? and then click on ?maximum words? and set it to 25.

Once you complete this exercise you have started the process to strategically position your job search. Next week I will continue this planning theme and present a business idea that can be readily applied to the job search.

China's state TV making huge global expansion (AP)

BEIJING ? The killing of a South Korean coast guard officer by a Chinese fisherman should have been tailor-made for China's CCTV News as it embarks on an ambitious plan to become a global network with assertive international coverage.

Instead, according to CCTV employees, the story languished for hours as editors awaited political guidance from above, while would-be competitors such as Qatar's Al-Jazeera reported extensively on December's attack.

In charting its growth, CCTV is closely studying other models, especially Al-Jazeera, which rolled out a global English language 24-hour news network five years ago and quickly made a name for itself.

Qatar's government bankrolled the station as part of its ambitions to parley its massive energy wealth into international influence, much as China is seeking global media stature behooving its booming economy, which now ranks second largest in the world behind the U.S.

But while Al-Jazeera's access and deep knowledge of the Middle East ? and a hands-off approach by its masters ? have been its greatest assets, state-run CCTV's emphatic allegiance to the authoritarian communist state and the party seem to be its biggest liability.

This greatly challenges CCTV's credibility and agenda to influence and channel global public opinion, said David Bandurski, editor of the China Media Project website at the University of Hong Kong.

"The role of the media as defined by the (Communist) Party is to serve the party's interests," Bandurski said.

A longtime CCTV program producer who asked to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the topic said virtually everything in the news report is decided based on political considerations. The issues are discussed at meetings, but the decision always lies with the top bosses while the journalists have no say in the outcome, she said.

Still, CCTV is gearing up to supersize its global footprint this year in pursuit of swaying a foreign audience to China's views and confronting what Beijing considers the Western media's inate anti-China bias.

The network is opening studios in Washington and Nairobi, Kenya, each employing as many as 200 staffers. Worldwide, it will increase numbers of foreign correspondents from 66 to 80 by the end of 2012, with more to come, according to people familiar with the plans.

In Africa, CCTV has linked up with major satellite TV operator MIH Group and plans to operate upward of a dozen offices, according to Martyn J. Davies, director of the Center for Chinese Studies at Stellenbosch University in South Africa who has discussed the expansion with CCTV officials.

"China is a major player in Africa but its media has been very low key," said Davies, who in 2004 helped set up Africa's first Beijing-sponsored Confucius Institute for Chinese language studies.

Yin Fan, spokeswoman for CCTV's international department, said the station was withholding comment until a formal launch of the expanded service. Individual employees said they had been told not to speak to the media about the expansion plans.

Many of the reporters, cameramen and technical staff are being lured away from other news organizations with the offer of high salaries and attractive perks. One freelance reporter in east Africa said CCTV recruited him aggressively and agreed to almost doubled his fee from $350 to $600 dollars per report. It also offered him the chance to present his reports in front of the camera instead of just passing the footage on to others. The reporter asked not to be identified by name.

Veteran U.S. foreign correspondent Jim Laurie, hired to help in Washington, said on his website he was looking for experienced news professionals and that plans call for the U.S. operation to produce four hours of programming daily by June. Laurie declined to comment for this article.

At a time when budgets are tightening in news rooms, China's government appears willing to pour billions of dollars into expanding its international media footprint. Hong Kong's South China Morning Post newspaper has reported the total budget to be as high as 45 billion yuan ($7.1 billion), although no official announcement has been made.

Expansion plans found support after 2008, a year in which China's image was walloped by protests among Tibetans and chaotic scenes accompanying the Beijing Olympic Torch on its journey around the globe, said Zhong Xin, a professor of mass media at Beijing's elite Renmin University.

Many Chinese opinion makers also felt let down by much of the coverage of the Olympics that praised China's organization but also shed a spotlight on political repression and stifling security, Zhong said.

CCTV was already broadening its overseas offerings to include programing in Russian, Arabic, Spanish and French, along with Chinese and English, claiming to reach 219 million households in 156 countries and regions. Programming is distributed on cable and satellite carriers in the U.S. as well as over the Internet. The Associated Press distributes a selection of CCTV news content to broadcast subscribers and also provides content and other services to the Chinese state broadcaster.

Many of the biggest stories emerging from China in 2011 are off-limits, including arrests of lawyers and dissidents and the detention of internationally famed artist Ai Weiwei. Reports on the much-criticized response to a deadly high-speed rail crash hewed to the official line, while unflattering stories such as December's stabbing in the Yellow Sea that sparked anti-Chinese protests in Seoul can be downplayed or ignored entirely.

Still, even that marks an improvement from years past, says Renmin University's Zhong.

"CCTV is basically trying to follow the model of CNN and BBC in delivering balanced information and reporting swiftly and from all angles," she said. "We've seen major changes in the reports over the past few years, both in their content and the way they're presented."

Slick production values have been embraced, along with varied reports on sports, the economy, travel and culture.

Notwithstanding the cosmetic changes, the fact is that CCTV is controlled by the state.

Its head is appointed by the party and the latest pick, longtime Communist Party newspaper editor Hu Zhanfan, seems intent to cement its control. Shortly before his appointment in November, Hu upbraided journalists who placed the truth above loyalty to the party, saying news must always reflect "our party and country's political stance."

"It takes a lot more than very smart looking programs to overcome perceptions about China and the Chinese government," said Anne-Marie Brady, who teaches at New Zealand's University of Canterbury.

Romney wins big in Florida, routing Gingrich (AP)

TAMPA, Fla. ? Mitt Romney routed Newt Gingrich in the Florida primary Tuesday night, rebounding smartly from an earlier defeat and taking a major step toward the Republican presidential nomination. Gingrich vowed to press on despite the one-sided setback

Romney, talking unity like a nominee, said he was ready to take the Republican helm and "lead this party and our nation." In remarks to cheering supporters, the former Massachusetts governor unleashed a strong attack on Democratic President Barack Obama and said the competitive fight for the GOP nomination "does not divide us, it prepares us" for the fall campaign.

"Mr. President, you were elected to lead, you chose to follow, and now it's time to get out of the way," he declared.

Returns from 98 percent of Florida's precincts showed Romney with 46 percent of the vote to 32 percent for Gingrich, the former House speaker.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum had 13 percent, and Texas Rep. Ron Paul 7 percent. Neither mounted a substantial effort in the state.

For the first time in the campaign, exit polls showed a gender gap, and it worked to Romney's advantage.

He was leading Gingrich 52-28 among women voters and was winning men by a far smaller margin of 41-36.

Ominously for the thrice-married Gingrich, only about half of women voters said they had a favorable view of him as a person, compared to about eight in 10 for Romney.

Nor was Romney's victory a narrow one. His winning percentage approached 50 percent and a majority that would demolish Gingrich's oft-stated contention that the voters who oppose Romney outnumber those who favor him.

Still, the former speaker said, "We're going to contest everyplace and we are going to win."

As in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, about half of Florida primary voters said the most important factor for them was backing a candidate who could defeat Obama in November, according to exit poll results conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks.

Not surprisingly, in a state with an unemployment rate hovering around 10 percent, about two-thirds of voters said the economy was their top issue. Nearly nine in 10 said they were falling behind or just keeping up. And half said that home foreclosures have been a major problem in their communities.

The winner-take-all primary was worth 50 Republican National Convention delegates, by far the most of any primary state so far. That gave Romney a total of 87, to 26 for Gingrich, 14 for Santorum and four for Paul, with 1,144 required to clinch the nomination.

But the bigger prize was precious political momentum in the race to pick an opponent for Obama in a nation struggling to recover from the deepest recession in decades.

That belonged to Romney when he captured the New Hampshire primary three weeks ago, then swung stunningly to Gingrich when he countered with a South Carolina upset 11 days later.

Now it was back with the former Massachusetts governor, after a 10-day comeback marked by a change to more aggressive tactics, coupled with an efficient use of an overwhelming financial advantage to batter Gingrich in television commercials.

Gingrich brushed aside any talk of quitting the race.

"We are going to contest everyplace," he said, standing in front of a sign that read "46 states to go."

"It is now clear that this will be a two-person race between the conservative leader, Newt Gingrich, and the Massachusetts moderate," he said.

Santorum disagreed, and said so. In Nevada, where he was campaigning for the state's caucuses on Saturday, he said, "Newt Gingrich had his chance, had his shot, had a big boost and win out in South Carolina and couldn't hold it." He said the voters are "looking for a different conservative and alternative to Mitt Romney now."

Already, Romney and restore Our Future, an organization that supports him, were outadvertising the field in Nevada. Figures provided to the AP showed the two combined had spent $370,000 so far. Paul has spent $209,000, but neither Gingrich nor Santorum had aired any commercials.

Romney won the Nevada caucuses four years ago and is favored to repeat his triumph this Saturday. Caucuses in Colorado, Minnesota and Maine follow, with primaries in Wisconsin on Feb. 21 and in Michigan and Arizona at the end of the month.

Gingrich, from neighboring Georgia, swept into Florida from South Carolina, only to run headlong into a different Romney from the one he had left in his wake in South Carolina.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, shed his reluctance to attack Gingrich, the former House speaker, unleashing hard-hitting ads on television, sharpening his performance in a pair of debates and deploying surrogates to the edges of Gingrich's own campaign appearances, all in hopes of unnerving him.

Restore our Future, an outside group supporting Romney, accounted for about $8.8 million in the ad wars, and the candidate and the "super PAC" combined outspent Gingrich and Winning The Future, the organization backing him, by about $15.5 million to $3.3 million, an advantage of nearly 5-1.

Gingrich responded by assailing Romney as a man incapable of telling the truth and vowed to remain in the race until the Republican National Convention next summer. He won the endorsement of campaign dropout Herman Cain and increasingly sought the support of evangelicals and tea party advocates, a former House speaker running as the anti-establishment insurgent of the party he once helped lead.

Bombarded by harsh television advertising, some Floridians said they had soured on both candidates.

"The dirty ads really turned me off on Mitt Romney," said Dorothy Anderson, of Pinellas Park, adding she was voting for Gingrich. She said of Romney, "In fact if he gets the nomination, I probably won't vote for him."

At the same polling place, Romney supporter Curtis Dempsey expressed similar feelings but about Gingrich. "The only thing Newt Gingrich has to offer is a big mouth," he said.

Voters frequently say they are offended or appalled by negative ads. But polls show consistently that the commercials are able to sway the opinions of large numbers of voters, and they are a staple of nearly all campaigns.

Santorum had no money for television ads to back up his strong debate performances. He left the state at one point, saying he was going home to Pennsylvania to prepare his income tax returns. But he stayed longer than anticipated, because of the hospitalization of his 3-year-old daughter with pneumonia. The girl has a rare genetic disorder, Trisomy 18.

Santorum and Paul both also campaigned in Colorado on Tuesday as Florida Republicans were voting. The state has caucuses on Feb 7, the same day as Minnesota.

Even before that come caucuses in Nevada, a state that Romney won when he sought the nomination in 2008 and is favored to capture again.

By contrast, both Romney and Gingrich campaigned across Florida on primary day as the polls opened.

Exuding confidence, the former Massachusetts governor said ? even though the figures said otherwise ? that he had been outspent in South Carolina.

"I needed to make sure that instead of being outgunned in terms of attacks, that I responded aggressively, and hopefully that will have served me well here," he told reporters.

Gingrich, combative as usual, said the race for the nomination won't be decided until summer, "unless Romney drops out."
